Road to the 2015 Ashes in England

Pat Cummins is the most talented bowler in the world. He was just finding his way in the shorter forms after such a long period without continuity. If he is selected at all in this series and gets going, it'll be carnage and goodnight nurse. Freak.

*Official* 1st Test at the SWALEC Stadium

I don't think Harris was going to play in this match, so his injury doesn't alter things too much. Haze is looming like a colossus over this series I feel. I think Johnson will do a lot of the damage, but Hazlewood is going to keep Cook and Bell awake at night.

It's not like Starc is generating huge pace mind you. Could well be a team directive.

Speaking of pace, decent wheels from old Watkins to start his spell.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Johnson come out with substantially more pace in the first ashes test. He admitted to throttling the pace back against India, and conditions here aren't much conducive to express wheels. I'm hoping anyway. If this is terminal decline, I'm going to miss the ****er.

Got that one up to 144.4 did MJ

That was a terrific delivery from Hazlewood too. His bowling average is 19.34 now.

Holy **** that was McGrathesque. The manner of dismissals, the bounce, the bristle, he's so similar it's ridiculous.

He was a total workhorse his entire career before the 13/14 summer, same pace all day. Pretty significant admission from him in terms of where he sees his body being at. It concerned me to hear it. Once you adjust your training and playing loads, you're putting your body through something...

His claim last summer that he throttled the pace back to get through longer spells seemed dubious to me. I wonder about players coming back from the IPL though, bowlers in particular always seem down on pace. Could be a factor. Share your concerns though.

    The pace essentially?

I don't think the global media has yet twigged to how ominous Josh Hazlewood is.

    4th thread - who's going to win?

Johnson fired in that series. Only reason it played out like it did. The gap between his best and worst back then was unbelievably ridiculous. I'm not sure I've seen anything else like it in sport.

    4th thread - who's going to win?

I don't think England ever got particularly good, even in 2010-12. Australia got really, really bad for a while there after the India debacle of 2008, and English cricket has been all about Ashes results. Need only look at Broad's twitter account to get a picture of how the players think...

Our bowling attack is stupidly good. And the bowlers with the most raw talent - Pattinson and Cummins - aren't even in the squad. Ryan Harris said a couple of years ago that the current attack with him and Johnson was good, but the attack coming up from underneath would be iron-fisted dominant.

Johnson easing into his work now. Haze is a freak. Ominous talent.

Starc and Johnson both look like they haven't played test cricket for a while. Be better for the run.

Are the Aussies getting back to the attitude era?

There was that ridiculous LBW non-call in 2010 when Johnson had whoever it was trapped plumb in front when they were 9 down. India ended up winning by 1 wicket. But yes, we haven't looked like winning a series in India for years.

Are the Aussies getting back to the attitude era?

The current test team isn't a dominant one, but when you look at the talent coming up from underneath, the ODI result may the harbinger of something bigger. I think a barometer is the spin depth. There's suddenly a fleet of young spinners, all "good enough" to become better players than Lyon if...
