    Curtly Ambrose vs Dale Steyn

Wouldn't it have to do more with the batting drop off? West Indies didn't have a great batting lineup during the late 90s. Less rest for the bowlers. If your batsmen don't score enough runs then you probably don't get a second innings to bowl pre 2001. I can't imagine South Africa's batting...

CW's Ranking of Opening Batsmen (Tests)

Hayden averaged nearly 60 in domestic first class cricket in Australia. Slater averaged 40. Slater was picked ahead of Hayden in 1993 on a hunch. Slater did well enough to not get dropped. By the time Hayden debuted in 1994 he had played 45 odd games and was averaging 64 with 15 hundreds. He...

    5th Test at Hobart - 14-19 Jan 2022

Green looked pretty comfortable on a pretty dicey wicket as a batsmen. Bowler friendly series and he averaged 33 as a 22 year old. If he plays on more flat wickets he could average close to 50. Bowling would probably be closer to 30 then 25 though. Shane Watson was averaging like 42 and 28...

This pitch looks a lot less green today

Will Kohli and Smith return to their former glory?

2017-Present is one of the harder eras for batting? Only 5 batsmen have averaged 50: Kohli, Smith, Williamson, Rohit Sharma and Labuchagne...

    5th Test at Hobart - 14-19 Jan 2022

How many other players have scored a near run a ball hundred on a green deck?

This is great Test cricket to watch.

    5th Test at Hobart - 14-19 Jan 2022

If Australia somehow scramble to 150 I could see England getting rolled back to back under lights on this pitch. Probably won't happen but we'll see.

Only going to get worse batting under lights. It's on the cards.

    4th Test at Sydney (?) - Jan 5-9 2022

Crawley sorta looks like a right handed Matthew Hayden with a higher bat lift. Tall, front foot dominant, likes the drive and front foot pull.

    4 & 5

Smith averages ~68 batting at 3 and 4. Outside of Australia Smith averages 67 batting at 3 and 4. De Villiers batted down the order and scored all of his runs at 5 and 6.

    4 & 5

Isn't swing more determined by overhead conditions and the ball being used then the actual pitch? Unless you're talking reverse swing. The only places you're likely to get swing in Australia is Melbourne or Hobart or in the evening of day/night matches. Everywhere else is pretty hot during the...

    4 & 5

That's only because of the suspension and COVID. You can't discredit his longevity as a batsmen because of a Global pandemic and a very harsh ban.

Mark Waugh vs Aravinda de Silva

If he had faced the West Indies more between 97-99 then yes he might have had a better record. Anywhere else it's questionable. Through 94- early 97 Aravinda played 19 Tests and averaged 20. If he had faced the Windies during that period his record could've been worse.

Mark Waugh vs Aravinda de Silva

In the 90s team in the decades XI Aravinda was picked. Mark Waugh was not. The 1990s was when both players were at their peak. Do people really consider Aravinda a better batsmen? By early 1997 Aravinda was averaging 34 after 57 Tests. Followed by a great couple of years. Mark Waugh played...
