You certainly may. Is it just me, or are sportsmen in general a helluva lot more handsome now than they were only a couple of decades ago? Seems almost a prerequisite these days.

I do, yes. I thought it was great. That's exactly the viewpoint I'm pushing back against. I'm pleasantly surprised to find it's so foreign to this forum's contributors. Screaming? Come now.

As things stand, Bangladesh are going quicker in a Test Match on a bowler's wicket than India in an ODI on a flat one.

I know, right? Heart in mouth every time he shapes for one.

No. By far the majority of those hits are opinion pieces. Go on and click one. Dileep Premachandran writes at length about the phenomenon here: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2009/aug/26/oval-ashes-pitch-india-cricket And here's another exhibit: Selective watering the secret to...

Would be interested to know a bit about Zafar Ansari's parentage. I risk sounding small-minded here, but I'm genuinely interested. He's not what I'd expect someone with his name to look like. I'd hazard a guess and say he has Caucasic connections -- I mean the region, not the race.

I'm glad I didn't take the advice of the usually excellent Ed Hawkins. He reckoned Finn was a good-value bet to be England's best bowler here.

It was a passing remark. You guys have made a lot more of it than I did. My main purpose was to praise the pitch, not to snipe at those who'll be sniping at it.

Well, I hope so. But I well remember the self-righteous noises we heard after South Africa's last visit to India...

Really? This happens every time a non-Asian team is spun out in Asia.

It's also worth noting that shortened Test Matches aren't great for short-term finances. Which is why we see so many slow, low, nothingness pitches on the modern circuit. One day I'll write a long Marxian tract, heavily footnoted and rich in dialectics, about how the pinches and exigencies of...

I don't know about that. There are legions of people who see nothing in cricket unless every second ball descends on Row Z. Not sure I follow.

A word about this pitch, by the way. It'll come in for some criticism (especially if England lose), but I think it's perfect. There's nothing like a low-scoring Test Match for sustained tension. I do wish they were more frequent.

My **** is still very much lost. It would take another 170-run partnership to find it again.

Cheer up, mate. Time was when these teams were separated by way more than mere inexperience, impatience and poor captaincy. Plenty grounds for optimism here.

They're suffering, Bangladesh, for having played so little Test cricket lately. By no means the only explanation for their panic and impatience, but I think it's the best one.

Five things I don't get about cricket

Where are you based, Marius? If in Gauteng, we should shoot the breeze at the Wanderers or Centurion some time.

On paper, sure. But this game is played as much in the mind as on the pitch, and not at all on paper. Look at the body language. Advantage England.
