Your best batsman coming in at 3 is such a myth

The #3 spot is too important to be left to some rando. You lose an early wicket, you need someone to instill some confidence. Doesn't have to be your best bat, but someone with a solid reputation at least. England trying newbies at 3 was just bad.

    Sunil Gavaskar vs Herbert Sutcliffe

It's more about the era for me. I rate Hobbs highly for what he did pre war, not post war. That era was a little easy for batting from all that I've read, compared to what Gavaskar had to face.

    Glenn McGrath vs Richard Hadlee

They would literally have to be different people altogether for them to prefer that. Kapil sucked in England. Vaas sucked in England and Australia. Wasim had an average of 28 in England, 22 in Pakistan. I dunno how you can ignore that. If you are saying they would have preferred to have...

    Glenn McGrath vs Richard Hadlee

Kapil sucked in swing friendly paces. Eng, NZ, SA. He did well in Aus and WI.

    Kapil Dev vs Ryan Harris

Excellent point well made. With all thar he's done in the last few years, I would have no trouble putting Southee over Harris. This isn't me just trying to be consistent and painting myself in a corner. Southee has done enough to rank above Harris, who continues to be wildly overrated by many...

    Kapil Dev vs Ryan Harris

    Fair enough Fwiw this is the breakdown for that period I mentioned for Kapil: in Australia 1981-1981 3 5 120.5 26 333 14 5/28 6/69 23.78 2.75 51.7 2 0 in England 1979-1979 4 5 173.5 49 495 16 5/146 5/146 30.93 2.84 65.1 1 0 in India 1978-1980 19 35 627.4 143 1837 80 7/56 11/146 22.96...

    Kapil Dev vs Ryan Harris

Possible. No statistical reason to think so though, unless you don't think 2 years is enough time for someone's best to be considered that. Since neither of us have seen Kapil bowl in 79-80, I guess that should make us both wary of having firm opinions based on just watching Harris bowl.

    Kapil Dev vs Ryan Harris

Maybe you could deal with the best argument instead of lazy ones. Kapil achieved what Harris achieved. Between Dec 1978 and Mar 1981, Kapil took 117 wickets in 27 tests at an average of 24 and SR of 50. That is already Harris' career who took 113 wickets in 27 tests at an average of 23 and SR...

    Kapil Dev vs Ryan Harris

That's fine. But if they played in contemporary times and only played that many games and didn't have a record in Asia to speak of, you would have a differing view point. So, I don't know what your point is wrt this thread.

    Kapil Dev vs Ryan Harris

It's you they are denigrating, not Harris. Poor though, I agree, not in the spirit of the forum. Neither is it to call people Indian fanbois and Kapil supporters.
