Depends if you are asking for the five best performing drivers overall or the best five relative to equipment, will go with the former for now

1. Piastri
2. Verstappen
3. Russell
4. Norris
5. Leclerc

Completely my personal opinion, feel free to give me as much shite as you desire

I meant whoever has been able to get the maximum out of their cars so far, or closest to it this season, on a regular basis.
So I went
1. Verstappen
2. Russell
3. Leclerc
4. Piastri
5. Albon
6. Norris

Fair call, if you believe the McLaren is so far ahead of any other car (which is absolutely a reasonable call) then Max and then Russell as one and two is absolutely fair, I would still personally have Piastri ahead of Leclerc though. Also agree with Alex Albon getting a high rating, preseason I thought Sainz would be the best Williams driver, but Albon has been a lot more consistently fast, there is an argument he is having his best season in F1 to date

Yeah I thought about Piastri vs Leclerc. Probably the Leclerc fanboy in me putting him ahead, but I also can't help but think, based on this season too, if Leclerc was in that Mclaren, there would be a bigger gap to Norris. Piastri is only 9 points ahead, and imo the big difference between them has come in quali, where Norris has made quite a few errors.
Yeah but Piastri over Leclerc is totally fair as well.

Yeah fair enough, I am a big time Piastri fanboy myself so it is probably understandable we both came down on different sides on this one, but yeah it isn't an absurd call by any means

Agree with this. If Piastri is getting the most out of his car, then why is he only 9 points ahead of Norris who we know certainly isn't?

Molehill defending the English racer, big shock

Seriously though I do agree to some extent Piastri has made a few errors, hasn't been entirely clean from him, but relative to Norris who has a lot more experience he is definitely the more impressive of the two McLaren drivers this year

Not defending Norris at all, if anything the complete opposite. I think Norris would be one of the last on the list for who is getting the most out of their cars. The McLaren is clearly far superior and he has the most experience of driving it. He's made a catalogue of errors and if he doesn't win the title this season then I doubt he ever will (because Piastri will only get better).

The McLaren intra-team battle should be going the way of Hamilton v Rosberg where one driver is obviously superior. Piastri is only 9 points ahead and doesn't have unreliability as an excuse, so while he's been better than Norris, he hasn't been hugely better.

Max, Leclerc, and on this season's form, Russell would have the championship all but sewn up in a McLaren IMO.

Turning to the rookies as well for a slight tangent

Hadjar

Bortoleto

Bearman
Lawson
Antonelli

Colapinto
Doohan

I’ll be honest, I’m really unsure of how to order those middle three. Hadjar has been outstanding of course, and Bortoleto has been showing up Nico a bunch of times. Antonelli has the best car but also the best teammate, Lawson has been very solid at RB, matching Hadjar at times. Bearman… is a weird one. Ocon has put out some great qualis and thus great race results, sometimes Bearman feels like he has a race pace edge but he is doing so awful in qualifying. Colapinto and Doohan haven’t really been able to touch Gasly, and Alpine has sucked for a while which hasn’t helped.

I'd have the rookies in the exact same order bar Lawson and Antonelli. I think Lawson has recently picked up good form, but over the course of the whole season, I'd go Antonelli. He's going up against Russell in the Merc who's been top 3 drivers this season. So it looks worse imo.
