I dont really agree. He played really really well in Ranji and looked pretty good in the IPL. The thing is, if you pick him, you give him the best chance of success at the role he is picked for, which is a bowler who can bat. His primary job is still to bowl and get wickets. And with the attack we had this game, and with Siraj not being at his best, I would have still tried Shardul up the hill with the new ball with Bumrah at the other end. When you basically shut a bowler out of the attack, it does not exactly give much of an endorsement and begs the question, why play him anyways if you rate his bowling to be this poor? I mean, I can see NKR getting more overs here than Shardul has.
He looked awful in the A game. Should not have played after that.

There is not only what selectors think, also what the captain makes of it. If Gill is not going to use him, why pick him? Not sure if the comparison is right, but reminds me of Dhoni not using Stuart Binny.
Because he doesn't trust him. Maybe he doesn't think much of him but being a rookie captain, he didn't feel confident enough to demand otherwise.

Big difference is that Binny was the best we had then and we have both better batters and bowlers than Shardul in this touring party for us to have gone either way, if the confidence is this low on Shardul as a bowler.

Should've had a 100 run lead and England probably be chasing close to 500 if not for some pathetic catching particularly from Jaiswal and ordinary bowling

Even with the late order collapse, we could've had things under control

We're probably two bowlers short with Shardul and Jadeja being useless in this game

Heads should roll after this game. This is not even a great England side and they will soon have Archer and possibly Wood back as well

Jadeja shouldn't be seeing out all 5 games either. Really isn't offering anything of substance now.

On Jadeja:
A proper all-rounder. Batting-wise, it is not his fault the fragile tail following him is pretty useless. And as a bowler? It's just not a spinner's wicket. I think he did well in England's first innings. At least not leaking runs.

The problem starts when you are relying on Jadeja to be your lead spinner

I think they are definitely reacting better and learning from their mistakes. But really we have very little to play with, as a bowling attack, in flat conditions here esp. without Kuldeep.

In conditions very loaded towards seamers, which is basically what SENA has been every time we have toured since 2015, I think its understandable. On this pitch and if we were so unsure of Shardul as a bowler, I think its criminal we did not play Kuldeep ahead of Shardul.
