His centuries against top teams resulted in only one victory, marked by the iconic Headingley hundred in 2014. Post-2015, Mathews’ Test stats seem to have been padded.

Mathews has lost his reflexes for last 3-4 years. He no longer is the good player of pace he used to be. But he is a very good student of this technique and has changed it and still remains as useful by grafting it out. His bowling never materialized due to injuries.

Aravinda lost his best years to the Sri Lankan civil war. There was a time he was averaging 90+ in Ocenia. If there was enough matches between 88 - 92 period, he would have averaged north of 45.

Samaraweera is basically what he is. Decent batsman. What we lost was his canny off breaks due to injury. This is a guy who averaged 45 with bat an 25 with ball in domestic cricket before his injury. Had the potential to be the best all rounder produced by Sri Lanka.

In summary, all three did not fulfill their potentials due to various reasons.,

Not much better but better value , think what pips him is his leadership qualities , and he had a great record with the bat as captain for about 30 odd tests of Sri Lanka.
