301 for 5 is not a bad first day total with a few overs left

I said we need 400 in this first innings with the team selected

could still be on

A cracking day for the Durham boys down on the south coast.

After winning the toss and batting, I felt we had every chance of making a good total and despite Gay’s dismissal, we’d steadied the ship into the calmer waters of 64-1 with around thirty minutes of the session remaining. For us to slip to 82-4 in the second over of the afternoon was a big concern. I think at that point every batsman will have been disappointed with their dismissal, with only Lees who could honestly say they were beaten by a good ball.

Hampshire won the first session, but we won the two that followed, with the final session being especially comprehensive in our favour. To close the day on 330-5 - with a passage of batting that was worth 248-1 to carry us from a tricky position where we were well under the cosh - is very pleasing. Special mentions indeed to Clark, Robinson and Drissell. The positive effect that a couple of decent partnerships can have on any innings should not be undersold.

It’s brilliant for Clark of course, its reward for the hard work he’s put in over the years and I know there are many Durham members who feel that he’s not had the rub of the green in terms of selection. Whenever there’s been someone to drop out of the side, regularly he has been the one to make way irrespective of form. For Robinson it’s good to finally see him get a score, lord knows he needed one, but it’s frustrating that he threw his wicket away when he looked destined for three figures. What’s more, he needs to use this as a springboard, to get his season truly up and running. Thirdly, Drissell has been an absolute revelation this season from a batting standpoint and it’s clear that whilst he may not turn many balls or pick up many wickets, he can make the argument that his continued selection is justified for his batting alone.

Kevin James commented early on that they’re using the same pitch that they did against Somerset, but it appeared for the most part to be fairly placid. They sent down 46 overs of spin, more or less half of the entire days play and yet I can’t remember anything that went off the straight. It surprised me also that when they took the new ball on 80 overs, they only bowled 7 overs of pace before they turned back to the spin option. Aside from Abbott, their quicks didn’t pose much of a threat all day.

For the cricket that’s left to come, I do feel like our seam bowlers should pose a greater threat than theirs did when we get our turn. I’m not particularly confident that our spin twins are better than theirs on talent or form and they definitely don’t get as much of an opportunity to get over, but atleast our boys should have the benefit of a healthy first innings total and an extra days worth of wear. From then, you’d expect that they’ll also have a Day 4, fourth innings pitch to work with and I hope we’re in a position where we’re pushing for victory.

Like Carty says, it’s vitally important we go beyond 400. I said at the top that it’s very pleasing to have scored 330 today with plenty of power to add, but I’m mindful that we’ve got a tail that is as long as any we’ve had during the Ryan Campbell era and so it’s vitally important we press on in the morning.

Having said that, I’m sure that with 300+ already on the board, we’d all be fairly comfortable if the pitch suddenly starts doing alsorts!

434 at lunch with 3 wickets in hand

I suggest half an hour of slogging and get bowling
No rush Carty, plenty time left in this one.

Another session to Durham, 104-2 in it, I think Drissell will be gutted with the manner of his dismissal though given he had a hundred there for the taking. Delighted with how it’s gone so far and the ball has started to turn a little bit more out of those foot-holes!

Dawson could end up with the worst 5-fer I’ve ever seen here 😂

As for us, we’re not really going anywhere. Hard to see what the tactics are, might aswell either have a swing or declare. 52 overs left in the day if we’re all out in this over.
