I think giving Swys the coaching job was a very good move. He's got a great rugby brain, and it's a far less stressful position than the previous ones he's held. So it's ideal for him and it seems to be paying dividends.

And to add to Kallis's credentials, he was a seam bowler with decent pace. That takes a lot more out of a player than other forms of bowling.

Muthusamy has more hundreds, but it's from more games. He's got 9 from 112 games and Fortuin has 7 from 71, so Fortuin's actually scores hundreds more frequently. He also has the better batting average, although it's 31.03 compared to 30.78, which is a very marginal difference. Muthusamy does...

It depends whether he saw the headbutt or not. It wasn't immediately obvious, so he might not have known why Wiese was red carded. But absolutely a completely stupid moment from Wiese.

Apparently Rassie has said something along the lines of the Italy and Georgia matches being a potential farewell for some of the older players. I think the thing about Willie is that a lot of the good things he does go unnoticed. Everyone remembers the try scorers, but no one remembers the guy...

He already has a good record in Asia, although it is just three matches.

    South Africa team selection

I didn't interpret that as him thinking he might get another opportunity, but more in the sense of "If I had to do it over again I'd make the same decision".

In that case, shouldn't it come down to the coach? I have a great deal of respect for Shukri Conrad for everything he's done during his tenure as coach, but allowing (or telling if that was the case) Mulder to declare is something I completely disagree with.

That I can get behind a little given how immense Bradman's record is and how iconic he is to Australians. But Lara doesn't hold that sort of status amongst South Africans. If it had been Graeme Pollock then maybe, but Pollock's score has already been surpassed multiple times.

Even if Lara lost the record he'd still be remembered as the first person to make 400 and the only other one to it. And he'd still have his 501, so it's not like his achievements as a batsman would have been diminished all that much.

If they were really against Mulder breaking the record then why not declare sooner? Do it half an hour before lunch when Mulder was still a reasonable distance away. Not when he's so close.

This makes no sense. I get that they'd want to get Zimbabwe in to bat at some point, but the extra time it would take for Mulder to get to 400 surely wouldn't make much difference. There'd still be enough time to bowl Zimbabwe out twice.

If Mulder's still there at tea, he's going to be in touching distance of 500. No way he's stopping then.

Even though the decision of when to declare isn't just up to the captain, he is the one who has to tell the umpires. Not that I think they're not going to let him go for it, this would be one time a player would be completely justified in going against the coach's wishes.
