Hi mate, There is little about Jack out there. Gideon Haigh did a quick bio. that you can find in his book "Game for Anything". There isn't a lot else out there (other than very quick bios on Cricinfo etc). I am currently finishing my PhD (in a non-cricket related area) and once that is done I...

I wouldn't have thought that this one is any worse than any of his others. All of them have the same basic problem that he simply makes up stuff to suit his agenda.

    Cricket Books

I agree that the non-first class competition cricket book market has reached saturation point, and your liking of the various offerings depends greatly upon which one/s you read first. The first one I came across was Jim Young's 'Any Old Eleven' and I loved it. After reading RainMen and...

From the look of it, I don't think that YellowMonkey agrees with you.

But other than that you liked it? My favourite quote about Perry was by Gideon Haigh, who referred to Perry's effort on Bradman as a 'book shaped object'.

Whereas in Australia, every second auction is for a collection of four cricket books all featuring Chappelli, Walters or Walker.

Channel 9 Commentators - Very Poor Form

I am really annoyed with the Channel 9 commentary team in the current Test match against South Africa. This isn't merely a whinge about the usual banalaties they sprout forth. Every hour or so, they are quoting the current odds being offered by betting agencies on the outcome of the game. Now, I...

Gideon Haigh has just such a lovely way with words. I love this description of the books about Bradman - http://content-www.cricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/369983.html

    Cricket Books

Interesting review of the new Invincibles book Arch. I don't think I'll be chasing it down in a hurry  Its funny to see Perry doing the same thing that Jack Pollard did. Pollard wrote his history of Australian Cricket, and then kept producing further books that were merely cut and paste...

Hmmmm. Does this mean we need to re-evalute the ratings system? I put so much thought into developing it

    Cricket Books

Tedious is tedious. Academic writing should be full of wit and sparkle, and not dry and dusty. At least, that's the line I am going to take with my examiners

Nice review of "Challenging The Myth" by the way. I read it a few years ago, and agree that it is someone's university masters thesis rather than a genuine book (not denigrating university work, but it was clearly written for a specialist market and not mass consumption).
