The value of ATG specialist bowlers vs bowling AR's/bowlers who can bat (picking the strongest all time XI)

Why else would you justify batting deep if not for runs scored? It's not lazy at all, it's just the plain simple reason you would do it. How many runs an innings do you think your bowlers of Marshall, McGrath, Warne & Wasim save compared to my team of Marshall, Hadlee, Warne & Khan? Or more...

The value of ATG specialist bowlers vs bowling AR's/bowlers who can bat (picking the strongest all time XI)

I largely select the batsman on their batting ability and take their fielding ability as a bonus. Admittedly I am not putting much consideration in for their slipping ability but perhaps I should be. Having a good cordon probably is the most important skill, a good 5th option would be 2nd &...

The value of ATG specialist bowlers vs bowling AR's/bowlers who can bat (picking the strongest all time XI)

Fair enough, I'll clarify what I should have said. We do remember the early or late slumps but they should not take away the greatness of the best players. When I think of a player I try to think what they were like at at their best and whether they sustained that for a long enough time. If...

The value of ATG specialist bowlers vs bowling AR's/bowlers who can bat (picking the strongest all time XI)

Oh come on play the game, back it up. Imran's 52 with the Bat 20 with the ball as captain stat gets brought up ad nauseum. Clearly we do remember players at their best. The years I gave track with Khan's changes in bowling. He did change his action in 1976, he used reverse swing at the MCG...

The value of ATG specialist bowlers vs bowling AR's/bowlers who can bat (picking the strongest all time XI)

Long post here so I appreciate it if you get through it. The thing is people will rate other ATG bowlers who have a similar amount of away appearances. If we move Imran's record back to the beginning of the series against India (21 Nov 1979) It's now 26 matches at 21.13. How does that compare...

    Is this the one you were talking about? http://www.cricketweb.net/forum/threads/top-order-1-7-wickets-percentage-of-great-test-bowlers.77377/ Vaas 274/355 - 77.2% Anderson 387/514 - 75.3% McGrath 421/563 - 74.8% Donald 244/330 - 73.9% Marshall 277/376 - 73.7% Ambrose 293/405 - 72.3% Lillee...

The value of ATG specialist bowlers vs bowling AR's/bowlers who can bat (picking the strongest all time XI)

As I said earlier, everyone bats but not everyone bowls. My personal belief is that with a star studded bowling lineup an ATG batting lineup will still get bowled out. So in those cases the total runs you make by your entire XI matter a lot. Does your 8-11th bowler who probably doesn't even...

The value of ATG specialist bowlers vs bowling AR's/bowlers who can bat (picking the strongest all time XI)

Certainly he was a stronger bowler at home helped by patriotic umpires & apparent ball tampering. I think you're selling him short with his away performances. In his bowling peak from 1980 -1988 he was still averaging 21.17 @ 5.13 WPM in away matches. This isn't as good an average as Hadlee...

The value of ATG specialist bowlers vs bowling AR's/bowlers who can bat (picking the strongest all time XI)

Yeah the analysis would be difficult. Only a few games against a top player makes it hard to quantify. Off the top of my head just looking at wicket records of which batsman a bowler regularly got out/what their average score was does help paint a picture somewhat. McGrath dismissing guys like...

No Ashwin or Jadeja in Asia :-O Who are your two spinners then? Murali and?

Miller would have been a great bloke to play cricket with, I remember Richie named him 12th man in his best XI. Indeed very few ever perform with bat & ball at the same time & when it does happen boy is it special. Sobers in England, Botham's Ashes, Flintoff in 2005. Herculean stuff. Imran could...

The value of ATG specialist bowlers vs bowling AR's/bowlers who can bat (picking the strongest all time XI)

Yep quite true, that's the benefit of having several amazing pace bowlers to call upon. If you knew that you could get away with bowling just 4 bowlers in a day & not lose any effectiveness with them, that gives you another specialist batsman to have in the side (not good for load management of...

I know, that's what makes a bat deep selection fun to discuss! It's a shame an ex-player hasn't gone a bit maverick trying it on a cricket show for a laugh, would like to see Boycott's reaction to it: most likely involving the word rubbish. Fair point, I forgot about the umpiring in that first...

Agree with Luffy you can pick either. Murali would be my other spinner in Asia so I might like a bit more batting with Jadeja there & there's less of a need to get bags of wickets with Murali around. Also it feels wrong to leave Jadeja out when he's posting ATG All rounder numbers in Asia. If...
