50 greatest cricketers since 1970

Rob Wesley

U19 Debutant
On a boring day, I thought of making my personal list of 50 best cricketers that played the game since 1970 onwards. Test cricket remains the prioritised format but have given a decent bit of space for great all format international players too in my collection.

Top 50 test cricketers since 1970:-

Australia(12) :-

Lillee, McGrath, Warne, Cummins
Chappell, Border, S Waugh, Ponting, Smith, Gilchrist, Hayden, Starc

England(5) :-

Botham, Root, Anderson, Cook, Stokes

Windies (9) :-

Marshall, Ambrose, Holding, Garner, Roberts
Viv Richards, Lara, Greenidge, Lloyd

South Africa (7) :-

Donald, Steyn, Pollock, Rabada
Kallis, AB de Villiers, G Smith

India (8) :-

Kapil Dev, Bumrah
Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Dravid, Kohli
Ashwin, Jadeja

Pakistan (5):-

Imran, Wasim, Waqar
Miandad, Younis

SL(2) :- Murali, Sangakkara

NZ(2) :- Hadlee, Williamson

Honourable mentions - Andy Flower, Virender Sehwag, Shiv Chanderpaul, Bob Willis, Kevin Pietersen, Hashim Amla, Michael Clarke and probably a lot more. I would be happy to know what Cricket web forum feels about this.

Forgot Walsh and Knott. I will probably drop Starc and include one of them.

Shakib definitely needs to be there imo.

Also Yousuf is a surprising choice when Inzamam exists

Good list for most of all but I can conclude that you have set up slightly high standards for openers- Hayden, Cook, G Smith ( opener+ captain) or Sehwag.

Matthew Hayden - All format great and a test average of 50 for opener is Gold.

Alastair Cook - Amazing longevity and test series wins in Australia and India being standout performer

Graeme Smith - Legendary captain and phenomenal match winner in Tests especially while chasing in 4th innings.

All 4 below any of the batsmen I named frankly quite easily. Think Greenidge is the lowest batsman, 2nd would be Crowe. Easily better than them for me. Amla above them as well for me.

It’s down to batting spots also. They opened the batting and it is harder job than #3 and #4.
