Unlike the others Gooch actually failed at test level. He clearly wasn't good enough against the higher standard of bowling. I'd rather pick Hirst or Mead and know they've got a risk of not performing than guarantee bad performance by going with that proven mediocrity whose surname is a synonym of one of your favourite words.
You're right about Gooch, of course, but the other blokes also got voted in because of their FC records despite how they went in tests. Rhodes took 2 WPM, Compton was a massive HTB and Ranji is old timey Kambli.
Silly boy. Gooch shouldn't even make the third English team. He should probably make the first NZ team after Bert Sutcliffe though.
Sutcliffe has a 6 point higher standardized average. Might legitimately be a better test batsman than Gooch.

Yeah I'm not joking around lol. In fact it's hardly questionable given Sutcliffe's longevity, especially if you big-up May for his standardised average.

Standardised average can only be used to hype up black and white English HTBs. Taylor, Hanif, Woodfull, Ponsford, and H Sutcliffe all stomp on Gooch. Shrewsbury as well.

Gooch is quite notably better than Openers remaining.
You jest, surely. There's loads of openers still unpicked who played in bad conditions with averages in the low 40s, and many more who played in better conditions with averages in the high 40s.

It's seriously improbable that none of them take their fancy to the extent that you're forced to go with someone like Gooch with a skewed record in favourable conditions who can still only muster an average of 42.
