Not that uncommon in pre-nuetral empires era. Bill Lawry was never given lbw in a test in Australia in 30 odd tests in his entire career ~10 yrs. Gavaskar was only given lbw once in India during first 9 years of his career.
Gavaskar played less than 20 matches at home in that timeframe and was averaging less than 40 in all his home serieses until bashing West Indies A in 1978, by 1979 he was getting proper LBWs. Even overseas he was LBW only 4 times.

Miandad on the other hand, until 1984 had no LBWs at home while 15 overseas.

Still a long enough time frame and sample size where a modern batter would be given lbw much more times due to better umpiring and DRS.

The problem isnt just not being lbw at home, it's the home vs away skew that miandad had. Gavaskar just wasn't that lbw prone even in away tests.

Yes, there is a skew but it's not entirely due to biased umpiring either way. Miandad would often just pad the ball when he wasn't getting run or was being defensive, there is a clip of Gavaskar mentioning this about Miandad himself. But the interpretation of giving lbw's in this situation varied in 80s a lot. Some umpires would still give lbw if the batter padded up to a swinging ball outside off, but Indian Pakistani umpires didn't unless it pitched straighter or the batsman tired to play a short but missed.

Miandad’s surfboard was massive
Yeah and he really used it a lot. He would judge the line length and use his pads instead of playing a risky shot. Obviously, this technique was not as feasible abroad as in subcontinent and he should've adjusted, but that is why I rate Gavaskar as a more technically sound player than him.
