I can't believe I ate the whole thing
9 certainties:

Conway
Young
Ravindra
Mitchell
Nicholls
Blundell
Santner
Henry
O'Rourke

Then 2 from Smith, Duffy, Fisher, Bracewell, and Patel.
The NZ lineup of recent times traditionally sees an injured or unavailable player replaced in their spot by the reserve, as opposed to an incumbent shuffling up. Ravindra has never batted 3 (or opened) so unless Walter makes a bold move and says "nows the time, we're grooming him for Kane's batting spot" the lineup will probably be:

Conway
Young
Nicholls
Ravindra
Mitchell
Blundell+
Bracewell
Santner*
Henry
Fisher/Duffy
O'Rourke

I think if they opt for 4 seamers and Santner-Ravindra as spin then it'll be Smith, Henry, Fisher, O'Rourke as they might be bold and take a punt on pace whilst shoring up the batting with Smith, which is harsh on Duffy.

'Matt Henry's overall Test record - 120 wickets at an average of 29.84 - does not scream elite. But scratch beneath that and you realise why Henry is rated so highly. When he opens the bowling, his record becomes 105 wickets at 24.11. Last year, he picked up 48 wickets in nine Tests at an average of 18.58 and a strike rate of 33.97. Among the top ten wicket-takers of 2024, only Jasprit Bumrah had a better average (14.92) and a strike rate (30.1). Don't be surprised if Henry continues from where he left off.'

Why on earth would Nicholls be selected? Chapman would be a better choice. Or Abbas. Or Mariu. Or Heaphy.

Nicholls just isn't good enough any more. What happens if he fills his boots here? Really addled thinking going on in that original squad.

Zimbabwe have a decent chance here. There's weakness in our batting line up that Zimbabwe do have the bowlers to exploit. I'm not sure Zimbabwe will fare so well against our bowling attack though

Seems like some are simultaneously worried about Nicholls getting out cheaply, and also that he might get a big hundred.
I guess the ideal scenario, short of him being left out of the team, would be for him to collect a laboured 35 batting in partnerships which contribute to a large team total.

Maybe the coach is just looking to field as much test experience as he can scrape together given the absences. Even so, it seems like a debut for Fisher could be on the cards.....that's a bolter selection. But if this group can't do the job and we get soundly beaten by Zimbabwe in the series, no doubt he'll ring the changes.

Experience is the only reason I can gather for it, with that experience being an asset for the tour of Aus which feels like what Walters is aiming for. I think there's enough time to blood someone new for that series, but whatever. If it's a "last chance saloon" pick then what does it say really? Nicholls fails against Zimbabwe and that's him done forever? Why would that be needed? If he succeeds and keeps his spot then fails against tougher opposition, what have we learned?

Unless there's been some behind the scenes work going on, like "here's your technical flaws, here's what we need, work on them" and he has, and they believe he could actually make a legit comeback, but I don't see it.

I was thinking it was particularly rough on Young to make him open again because of the injury, but to be fair he might actually prefer it as a chance to get some runs in the position and stamp a better claim on it given he's not going to displace Williamson or Ravindra at 3-4 at full strength. Nicholls is still pointless either way though.

I called it a while ago, Nicholls is going to break Lara's record and it will be beautiful.

With the squad I probably would've gone:

1. Rhys Mariu
2. Devon Conway (rotate with Latham)
3. Will Young
4. Rachin Ravindra
5. Daryl Mitchell
6. Glenn Phillips
7. Mitch Hay+
8. Mitchell Santner
9. Matt Henry
10. Will O'Rourke
11. Jacob Duffy

Reserves:
12. Tom Latham (second test for Conway)
13. Ajaz Patel
14. Nathan Smith
15. Tom Blundell (if Hay's injured)
Post injuries:
1. Rhys Mariu
2. Devon Conway (rotate with Latham)
3. Will Young
4. Rachin Ravindra
5. Daryl Mitchell
6. Mark Chapman (Glenn Phillips)
7. Mitch Hay+
8. Mitchell Santner
9. Matt Henry
10. Will O'Rourke
11. Jacob Duffy

Reserves:
12. Tom Latham (second test for Conway)
13. Ajaz Patel
