You take Ponting on a seamy road, De Villiers on a true green mamba, close in English conditions, easily De Villiers on fast turners and Ponting on roads.

I think people underestimate how talented Ponting was, I read a story of the first time Richie Benaud saw him hooking/pulling a ball, he immediately said Ponting was going to be one of the greats.

I don't think so tbh, he's mentioned in talent convos ofc. But not at the level he should be imo

“As a nine-year-old, I played the whole first season of school cricket without getting out and then at the start of the next year, they changed the rules so that you had to retire at 30,” Ponting told Herald Sun, recalling some of his earliest exploits with the bat.

“So from there on, I’d open the batting, try and face as many balls as I could, and not score many runs. I’d get a single on the last ball of every over, so I retained the strike. I’d get to the other end and ask the umpire what I was on. I’d try to get to 29 and hit a four or six off the last ball.”

De Villiers is probably a little more gifted given his greater skill on bad wickets but Ponting was probably a better learner. Overall, very close in talent level but probably De Villiers by a bit.

ABD is more talented. The most talented bat since Lara debuted.

Simply a cleaner hitter of the ball than Ponting and plays the ball so late in an unbelievable way. There hasn't been a bat I've seen with so much time on their hands against fast pace. Much more shots in his repertoire than Ponting and can manipulate the field better in creative ways.

Ability to adjust between different modes of cricket, from 360 hitting to blockathons, is almost unparalleled.

Almost no weakness in his game against any bowling.
