Sometimes people are just overrated. We have to accept it and move on.
Or that's just how good he was at the time.

And yes he was...

Is everyone overrating Root right now?

Saw at least 3 vids calling him England's greatest batter. Is he the best ever, and all such nonsense.

I literally just watched Root score a 150 against a team with Jasprit Bumrah, and I still.dont think he's better than Ponting.

To many, Harvey was the greatest batsman to ever appear after Bradman, atleast from Australia. Many in Australia still hold that opinion, in 1955-56, when he was averaging 61.74 as a 27-Year-Old, many rightfully assumed he would reach the same levels as the likes of Hammond, Hutton and so forth. But as we know, it didn't actually ever manifest, Ponting is no different than Harvey in that regard.

I would argue, neither he is necessarily on quality.

So we have
  1. Neil Harvey
  2. Ricky Ponting
  3. Steve Smith
all three have the exact same pattern – Immense peaks, declared the best since Bradman or at least a candidate, and then a decline that eliminates them from being a candidate. Smith is the best here, Ponting is closer to Harvey than he is to Smith, Only Smith makes the top ten, the other two are nowhere near BAB category.

Smith I would argue had the better peak and most importantly, the best trough.
