Allan Steel for me.Ranji, Spofforth and Lohmann are guarantees imo.
I'll go for Shrewsbury as well, 5th is either between the above mentioned guys or Blackham is a good shout too imo
Can't mention Billy Barnes without Billy BatesBilly Barnes
Life and too much effort. I got stuck writing up a Triangular Tournament post and then have kinda moved on. Remind me again sometime and I might come back to itCan't mention Billy Barnes without Billy Bates
(And what happened to that MoTS Thread??)
Him easily ahead of Bannerman and Darling, Ferris too probably.Billy Barnes
Not sure about Ferris tbhHim easily ahead of Bannerman and Darling, Ferris too probably.
The Steel disrespect is sickening.Ranji, Spofforth, Lohmann, Shrewsburry and Turner are easily the top 5 excluding Grace. Then one of Stanley Jackson and Hugh Trumble does for me.
I forgot him. He's arguably better than Trumble. Just below Turner for me.The Steel disrespect is sickening.
FC has to be considered while talking about 19th century cricket.1. Only Test cricket

29 batting, 14 bowling in FC.I forgot him. He's arguably better than Trumble. Just below Turner for me.
Didn't do much with the ball in Tests. Very good batting record tho. Very close overall.29 batting, 14 bowling in FC.
35 batting, 20 bowling in Tests. He is better than Turner imo.
Over 2 WPM under 21 in Tests, all the while averaging 35 with the bat isn't much for ya??Didn't do much with the ball in Tests. Very good batting record tho. Very close overall.
He took 29 wickets in 13 matches. And 35 is not reflective of his actual ability with the bat.Over 2 WPM under 21 in Tests, all the while averaging 35 with the bat isn't much for ya??
You are right. Ferris might be closer to Turner than we think. Here's something from the tour report of The Australians in England, 1890.Not sure about Ferris tbh
