I reckon he's close to the elite tier, his batting (like Gilly) sometimes leads to his keeping getting underestimated imo. He holds records in the county championships to this day, including most stumpings and most dismissals (in separate seasons).
"The wonderful record of A. P. Freeman, who taking 304 wickets in the season, beat the record of the late Tom Richardson, was helped materially by Ames' work behind the wicket. Ames took Freeman very well indeed. It has been said of him that he makes wicket-keeping look easy, which appears to be true; it is the greatest compliment which can be paid to a wicket-keeper."
Yeah, he kept to Freeman well, but there were quite a few journalists and players complaining about how playing Ames was in expense of better keeping as well.

Yup, because better keepers existed, who are arguably the greatest pure keepers of all time. It's not like Pant vs Jurel or something

Ames is a 40 averaging bat and he legit won't make England with the bat alone, shows how good 30s England batting was, marginally superior to Bazball England batting.

He tbf would have played atleast a few matches as a pure batter. Almost made his debut as one before breaking a finger, and still played in 3 as such.

A more muscular power game from my number 6 and I reckon he has a better chance keeping up the stumps to Barnes due to larger reach.
Even Knott isn't keeping to Barnes upto the stump, that's not gonna happen. And like, Sanga averaged 40 while at 3, much tougher than 5/6 imo. Also, like Sangakkara is just a much better overall batsman.

Quantitatively Yes, Qualitatively No, You know my opinion on tier 3 ATGs (Walcott, Weekes types) and Tier 2. I generally just want a quicker scorer at 6 and I'm willing to take Walcott for it.
