Stokes averages more than 40 only in South Africa. Yes he has 52 in the most difficult conditions for batting.
whereas Knott averages more than 40 in three countries- West Indies , Pakistan and New Zealand
The New Zealand Knott faced was particularly weak and is just low sample, but Stokes also has played in such weak countries and didn’t average well.
Overall If I’m dividing my tier for batsmen with batting as their secondary discipline + Stokes
then i will have (not including all players)
Tier 1 : Stokes, Dhoni
Tier 2 : Imran, Botham, Kapil
Tier 3 : Knott, Flintoff
Tier 4 : Hadlee, Marsh, Healy
Beefy was better test bat than Dhoni very easily.

In my view, Stokes is the better batsman and match winner.

His bowling has proved it's worth in this test match.

I've heard Knott was a very fine keeper, maybe the greatest or second greatest.

Greatest or second greatest keeper batsman, but as a pure keeper, at least Evans and Taylor were better, some would say Tallon and Oldfield as well.

Jack Blackham, Dick Pilling and Jock Cameron above him as well ig. Maybe Duckworth, Strudwick, Russell, Healy, Foster and Jayawardene can be argued as well. A few others I'm forgetting.
I'd have Knott in my top 10 though.

That's why it's so very difficult to rank keepers, and I've long given up on the idea.

Blackham goes back a bit too far for me, thought of Cameron and he's often my choice for the SA AT team. Also would place Russell, Healy or Jayawardene over Knott either. Highly, just not quite that high.

Certainly not Russell, Healy and Jayawardene… Not every tom, dick and harry is above Knott.

There isn’t much difference between Taylor and Knott as wicket keepers, so either Knott could be a bit ahead or a bit lower.
According to an English Newspaper Russell wasn’t ATG against Spin… Knott was extremely successful against Underwood on Sticky wickets… and both were ATG against Fast Bowling. So Russell is definitely out of the question.
One Wicket keeper i’d add to the list ahead of Russell, Jayawardene and Foster is Dujon. Haven’t seen anyone with that sort of reflexes against fast bowling. However unproven against spin.
His batting was also not far behind Knott.

Blackham was universally regarded as the best ever for half a century, which is a long time. Some claimed the same for Oldfield while others placed him behind Tallon. Bill O'Reilly reckoned Tallon and Evans were equal in 1946-47, Tallon better in 1948 (Evans had a bad day when Australia chased 400), and Evans ahead in 1950-51. Waite considered Evans "far superior" to Knott and Taylor.

Knott placed Wasim Bari at number one. Taylor favoured Healy. Before Sri Lanka played Tests their wicket-keepers were sometimes dubbed the best in Asia. In 1937 historian Tom Reese said the greatest wicket-keeper ever seen in New Zealand was former Melbourne club cricketer Charles Boxshall, who made his first-class debut for Canterbury at the age of 35. Most West Indian votes have gone to Jackie Hendricks. Top South African keeper could be a toss-up between Cameron, Gamsy and Ray Jennings. Plenty of differing opinions all round.

@capt_Luffy time for a top 50 list
I don't think ranking top keepers makes sense. Like, to separate Tallon and Evans, firstly I never saw them play; and secondly even if I did, I hardly doubt that would make much of a difference. So here's a Top 50 based on vibes and rep (and some footages), unranked:

  • Godfrey Evans
  • Bob Taylor
  • Dick Pilling
  • Gregor McGregor
  • George Duckworth
  • Allan Knott
  • Bert Strudwick
  • Jack Russell
  • James Foster
  • John Murray
  • Dick Lilley
  • Ben Foakes
  • Chris Read
  • Les Ames
  • Don Tallon
  • Jack Blackham
  • Bert Oldfield
  • Wally Grout
  • Ian Healy
  • Gil Langley
  • Barry Jarman
  • Brian Taber
  • Darren Berry
  • Ron Saggers
  • John McLean
  • James Kelly
  • Sammy Carter
  • Adam Gilchrist
  • Rod Marsh
  • Ray Jennings
  • Jock Cameron
  • Denis Gamsy
  • Ernest Halliwell
  • Tich Smith
  • Dave Richardson
  • John Waite
  • Naren Tamhane
  • Syed Kirmani
  • Wriddhiman Saha
  • Khokon Sen
  • Farokh Engineer
  • Wasim Bari
  • Rashid Latif
  • Ken James
  • Adam Parore
  • Ian Smith
  • BJ Watling
  • Jackie Hendricks
  • Deryck Murray
  • David Murray
  • Carlton Baugh
  • Ivan Barrow
  • Jeff Dujon
  • Prasanna Jayawardene
  • Herbert Fernando
  • Ben Navaratne
  • Guy de Alwis
  • Mahesh Goonatillake
  • Khaled Mashud

So yeah, 60 are here now, and 5 guys never played Test so works out perfectly.

Cartainly a very impressive job… still some doubts

Is Foakes ahead of Heally?
an no Gilchrist, Marsh or Dujon in 55?
From the footages available from 70s it must be sufficient to name Dujon as the GOAT to keep against fast bowlers… He was successful against the quickest bowling attack and is more revered than Murray.

I think Marsh and Ames should make it imo, I wouldn't have Gilly or Dujon either but.

It is a top 55 mate, Gilchrist is one of the few wicket keepers who have proven against all sort of bowling… successful against pace (Lee) , swing (Gilespie) and the greatest two turners of the ball (Warne and McGill)..
Dujon was more revered than Murray and Dujon kept to more hostile bowlers…
Marsh also proved against the peak Lillee and Thomson.

It's not ranked, instead ordered by country.

Gilchrist should be there, will add him. Probs Dujon too, but I rate keeping to spinners significantly higher than pacers and Dujon don't think was there. Marsh has a solid case, but like his nickname was "iron gloves" for a fair few years and he was the first Aussie keeper selected for batting. Still, probs him too though not sure whom to remove.
