Why did Mulder declare?
Doesn't want to be seen as someone who went after a "selfish" personal milestone, especially while being captain of the side. Set an example that only team results matter.

IMO no western player will chase this kind of record even when in striking distance. Seen it happen several times now.

Did he say this?

so confused that Mulder declared when he did

Have a sneaking suspicion that he didn't want all the media on him as some sort of a great batsmen then looking him up on Cricinfo

Say what Wiaan.

"I thought we had enough and we need to bowl. Secondly, Brian Lara is a legend let's be real. He got 401, or whatever it was, against England

For someone of that stature to keep that record is pretty special. I think if I get the chance again, I would probably do the same thing

Speaking to Shuks, he kinda said to me as well: 'Listen, let the legends keep the really big scores'

You never know what's my fate, or what is destined for me, but I think Brian Lara keeping that record is exactly the way it should be"

Understandable but you have to keep moving the needle in sport, no? This is something like all the Dagestanis in the UFC refusing to fight each other.

Disappointed in Conrad , why is he gatekeeping cricket records ? And it's a contradiction anyway , if "legends must keep records" why did Mulder break Amla's national record ? Could have just declared after getting the triple .

Weak mentality. You don't play for Lara, you play for yourself and your cricket team. And he's done himself some financial harm as well- foolish man.

The coach should have had no say in this. How can you stop a young player from chasing dreams?

Mulder will want to back this up with some more good performances. Let's be honest it must be a little bit embarrassing to have a 367* early
on in your career and yet still average in the 30's.

Cricket is such a unique sport in its regard to deference to precedent and the moral tension that creates (e.g. Mankad etc.). It shouldn't ever lose this quality. Makes for compelling discussion and narratives which is half of what makes sport so appealing.

So Amla is not a legend then?

Pathetic from him and Conrad.

This is elite sport not a Brian Lara ego massage.

His last 9 tests are too ridiculous to even comprehend..

827 runs (3 Test hundreds) @91.88
18 Test wickets @22.72

He's a work in progress but my word is he getting there , taking 2 wickets after scoring a triple ton was pretty impressive today.

staying not out will boost his average and give him a longer rope in the side, big brain move

Mulder can do what he wants, but I would have liked to see him not only beat Lara's test record but also beat 501, which would also beat Gooch's record for most runs in a Test, and then try and get South Africa to 1,000. If you are going to take some accolades, highest score by a South African, highest score by a South African captain, highest score by a debuting captain, you might as well take everything.

Absolute crap. We ok to pass SA legends but we draw the line at Lara.
How much did Brian pay wiaan and shuks...
