This has been done before in the context of who is better overall, but who is better just away from home? Lara obviously is better at home.

Imo

England – Either way
Pakistan – Gavaskar
New Zealand – leaning Gavaskar
Australia – Brian Lara
Sri Lanka – Brian Lara, one of the GOAT tours.

Lara also has a good record in South Africa but Sunil has a good record in the West Indies.

True.

I know the bowling wasn’t great in his debut series but 774 runs in 4 Tests was just spectacular.
The runs weren't downhill skiing and genuinely Very important to draw those games and some of the match situations, especially in the last 2 Tests, were pretty dire.

Aus 1977/78 for gavaskar
He averaged 50 against a depleted aussie attack in 1977-78, while he averaged 77 in England against peak Ian Botham in 1979, the latter was when Len Hutton declared him the leading Batsman in the world and that was what led to him being even in the conversation at the first place.

Lara was better in Australia.
