Interesting, not sure what we mean by "close" in this context.
They're close as bowlers in quality, and scored a similarish clip of total runs, but that's where the comparison ends. Sobers a BBB candidate, but Kallis is a bit underrated on the batting front. But as all-rounders Sobers had a huge bowling workload that Kallis never carried, regardless if you think Kallis had a quality advantage there.
Overall Sobers is a pretty meaningful upgrade, for mine.

Sobers is a bit better at batting, bowling and probably fielding too. So it adds up to a pretty sizeable difference overall imo.
Sobers edges Kallis on each individual skill. Comparing them as all rounders, Sobers had more purple patches where he was performing consistently with the bat and ball.
Really hard to make a case for Kallis, but he does have better numbers bowling in the second term innings.
