Lara is not a no 3. Viv idts can be placed as a proper no 3 in tests. Hammond is more of a no 4, not sure about Barrington either.
I think Barrington was best at #3.

Record there is obviously wild, though not the biggest sample size. I'm sure I've read quotes from his peers saying he was worse coming in later down the order as he couldn't relax when waiting to bat and got stressed out the longer he was kept back. Can't remember the source though - someone with a better memory/less lazy may be able to affirm/correct this.

Right now Hammond bats at 3 for my All Time Second XI, but I reckon the second greatest "specialist" (for want of a better word) first drop was probably Headley or Sangakkara.

If sample size doesn’t matter, Ken is the winner.

Only 4 batsmen have an average of 50+ after playing 100 innings - Dravid, Kane, Sanga and Ponting

Williamson 89.25%
Sangakkara 88.84%
Headley 80%
Dravid 76.57%
Bradman 70%
Ponting 68.29%
Chappell 66.91%
Kanhai 65.69%

Dexter 55.88%
Younis 38.97%
Hammond 37.14%
Richards 32.42%

I’ll leave you guys to determine where the line for specialist should be.

Notably Bill Edrich

#3 41 innings 2049 @ 51.22
Other positions 22 innings 391 @ 18.62

Surely 50% at least?

50% is the bare minimum in my opinion.

Like I said previously

If sample size doesn’t matter, it’s Ken

If sample size matters, I will choose Ponting

Just to have some fun with everyone and perpuate my “hatred”. Viv’s peak is generally considered 76-81.

Up until that point of his career he played mostly at 3. However when he started to decline seems like he started to hide down the order, no?

Can we say the same thing about Ponting, Boarder, Steve Waugh ,
Who also batted in multiple batting position?
