Sangakkara and Knott both are viable for Gilchrist as they offer something different. There's nothing such with Sobers. Everyone else is just a downgrade.

Bolo.

International Captain
Miller
Gilchrist
Imran
Hadlee
Marshall
Warne

I'd still pick Sobers, but he isn't that necessary. Hammond might actually be a better option... I'm just not that sure about how to assess him. Dropping Gilchrist is definitely losing something.

I think Sobers is the best human. And I don't actually pick Miller FTR. But I think going in with 5 good bowlers is a very defensible position. And if you go in with 5, I think I would rather drop Sobers than Gilly.

Nah, Sobers beats Gilly, there's no replacement for Sobers similarly to Fully and he's just a better player.
Is the argument for Sobers that a batting AR is a must or that he overall is too valuable as a player?

It's like saying that Gilly would be the first name of the Australian 2002 team over McGrath or Warne.

At some point value of position and contribution has to factor in. As much as he's a lock is he the 3rd most important player on the team?

And I know I've been consumed with the NFL draft and it's the argument of talent or premium position, but no one's taking a safety or guard over a quarterback or an edge defender. It's the same here for me.

To say if you only get 3 choices and after Bradman and Sobers, the next one is Gilchrist is kinda asinine.
And how is that? Its not like McGrath-Gillespie or Warne-MacGill is anything like Marshall-others or Warne-Murali. Completely different situation.

Well because if he is there by virtue of cricket ranking then we can argue for Hadlee and Imran on that measure etc.
I don't think you need any more than 4 elite bowlers, the 5th elite bowler would be getting the short end of the stick

I think for the vast majority of people he would make it on his batting alone. His extra skills make him a lock.

Sanga offers nothing over Gilly as a WK
He didn't play long enough as a WK for me. There are always question marks like how the body is gonna hold up, and how well he would have performed with the bat if keeping. But I wouldn't say he offers nothing. He is a league above as a bat based on the limited info we have.

A big part of why I am a fan of Gilly and and Warne in a team together is cos they are a proven combo. The potential for Gilly being worse than a higher rated keeper is to a large degree mitigated by this. Sanga/Murali has elements of the same sentiment.
