Hammond used to make casual double hundreds in FC after the war, we know how that translated to tests.

I don't know when such a common fact became an excuse. Applied to Hammond in Australia in 1946-47, applies to Compton in Australia in 1950-51.

5-7 in batsmen I could swap around at will.
16-18 in bowlers may be similar to that too.
