Imo these 8 guys have a case for the number 4 spot
lot of pre WW1 spinners are getting forgotted. I don’t know how they would rank against their successors, or how great Loahmann is? Although I rate Hobbs second to the Boy from Bowral based on his reputation on how he handled googlies on wet wickets , his batting videos which I have seen looks like his batting was too fragile in comparison to his successors… can’t even imagine him playing toe crushers of Waqar.

Larwood couldn't preassure Hobbs, so I don't think Waqar is doing much unless it's peak Waqar, then everyone would struggle.

I'd personally put Gibbs there too but I know I'm alone on that one, Hugh Tayfield too but I know I'm alone on that alone as well.
Nope you're not alone. PEWS rates him in the top 5.

And personally, These two and and Underwood appearing that high wouldn't raise my eyebrows.

All of Laker, Grimmett and Ashwin have decent shouts, Verity too.
The only one who isn't a decent shout-out for no.4 is Qadir. Kyear knows this but again needs to be shifty about it to avoid being pinned down by you.

Now watch, he is going to argue he didn't SAY Qadir is number 4, merely that it's not clear who is. Trying to wiggle out.

Sure slips have slightly more chances but we can't ignore runs entirely.

Having a strong cover/gully gives a lot of confidence and builds pressure for the bowler.
Reaching a bit here.

Slips are definitely the most important fielders. Of course, people’s perceptions of how exactly important they are compared to secondary skills somewhat differ on here…

Are they objectively more important in the sense that the absence of one affects more than others? Sure.

But I think it's easier to find a baseline competent slip catcher than in the covers/gully who will be both a good ground fielder and catcher.

The marginal value of an exceptional slip catcher to take blinders is a bit exaggerated IMO because most here assume the alternative is an exceptionally bad 90s Pakistan slip, which is not the reality for most teams.
