Imo that's not what subs meant, as the world didn't have any great bowler bar Steyn from 2008 to 2014, the world doesn't have many great batters now.
Pretty evident to see quite frankly.

But with the shift in focus to the shorter formats, how many better ones are we going to get?

don't think the focus shifted to shorter formats, tests ate ODI recently.

Yup and I would say even in the 90s bats knew how to weather tougher spells much moreso than today.

I don't disagree with poor modern batting techniques, but equally Shamis bowling technique is a thing of beauty and would trouble the best
I think Zaheer would have Shami figures if he were bowling today. Not to slam Shami though who is a fine bowler.

Steve Smith and co, and Pre Covid most teams had much stronger batting units. It's like saying bowlers had poor technique in the 2000s
