Who would their respective teams take?
Best all time wicket keepers batsman

Vs

A top 15 batsman, top tier elite 2nd slip catcher and one of the best 5th options ever?

Both are invaluable. Australia had Punter though, so they would have likely stuck with Gilly.

But same with SA though

Difficult choice.

Kallis a great, top batsman, one of the best of his era, and brings his pace bowling into play.

Gilchrist, a great keeper who can play purely as a batsman and can take the game away.

Id say based on kallis being the better batsman who can add value to his bowling. Kallis a top slip fielder too.

Kallis

I don't know how one can look at a Kallis (or Sobers, Ponting etc) and not factor in their ability to take catches in cordon consistently. For both Kallis and Sobers it's practically as useful as their bowling, and at a hypothetical higher level, even more so.

Kallis saved a test against India in 2011 I believe. India would've would've won a series in SA but Kallis stood in the way in the last test with that defiant hundred.

Given options, both.

On having to choose just one, Australia had Ponting, Waugh bros, Martyn, Clarke, Hussey, etc. and not really many notable back up keepers; I believe Gilchrist, at no 7 with his explosive batting and fine glovework brings more to that side than Kallis would even with the ball.

Similarly, South African batting was much worse, with Kallis being the driving force. They can't afford to trade Kallis with a no 7 bat, no matter his quality. And with a very dependable glovesman and decent lower order bat in Mark Boucher, they atleast weren't struggling to find a keeper.
