Shivnarine Chanderpaul vs Martin Crowe

Who is the better test batsman?

Aside from all the discourse over batting position, he was definitely a lot more suited to slow pitches. Sub-45 SR grinders are nearly always much more suited to slow tracks, especially on flat slow tracks where defensive play is easier. Shiv's statistically least favourite ground in the Caribbean was Sabina Park, the fastest WI track in the 2000s. He also struggled in Australia.
No wonder he loves playing against the Indians

i suppose the counter to this argument would be, how do other ATG batsmen fare on slow, low spinning tracks? Let's take the current fab 4 for example

these CW polls are taking the piss and no where near representative of the wider cricketing community and rather people's high-brow cricket statistic snobbery

No I think it's because people think Crowe was better.
It's just coming across as a Chanderpaul hate thread more than an actual comparison. No arguments have been presented thus far as to why Crowe would seriously be considered higher than Chanderpaul.

Except there were, at least implicitly. Crowe batted higher up the order in a tougher era and his average isn't padded by not-outs acquired at the expense of his team mates.

Is it Chanderpaul's fault he was equipped with such a woeful batting lineup, and if so, what's the point even considering him at all in ATG discussions

There are better ways of batting with an awful tail (see: BC Lara, or for a non-ATG example VVS Laxman, or even Ben Stokes). I don't want to rag on Chanders again but Crowe actually played in worse lineups I think. I also really rate his work against the 2 Ws and credit him for being the first batsman to figure out batting against reverse swing.

But yes, Chanderpaul is afforded a greater status in ATG discussions than he deserves because of his average. Behind Lloyd and Crowe is a fair reflection of his actual output.

The day when CW is condemned for underrating dour players like Chanderpaul and Barrington oft ignored in wider cricketing circles, I thought I'd never see.

Wider cricketing circles are full of morons, even moreso than here, no point really.

Plus if it was say, reddit, you’d get downvoted to hell and nobody would see your post anyway.

Wright, Jones, Reid were all equal or better than Gayle (I know Jones & Reid never played together)

Coney > Sarwan
Crowe's support was bad towards the end.

Coney was perhaps a better bat than Sarwan, but if we're talking purely batting support grounds, Sarwan averaged 40 which is a product of an extremely friendly batting era that helped Chanderpaul as Sarwan batted higher and was there in partnerships etc.
