Hypothetical scenario

The mind wanders from time to time.

So bearing in mind the key word here is HYPOTHETICAL.

If England had qualified for the WTC final instead of India, what impact would that have had on The Ashes? Would be quite strange to have an Eng-Aus Test, a week before The Ashes, that isn't part of The Ashes.

If they are going to insist on playing these finals in England, and you'd assume they'll continue in odd-numbered years, then it's a scenario that could arise in future, I guess?

eng spam too many tests. will find it difficult to make any wtc final based on current points system so you don't have to worry

Especially in places they're never going to win. Would be far better off just losing 2 Tests in India then heading off somewhere else.

Me, thinking about making this thread - hmmm, someone will point out England wouldn’t make the WTC final and completely defeat the object. Best make it very clear that I’m asking a hypothetical question. This should do it:

Village idiot, in the first reply:

England only win in SA and SL so won't pick up enough away wins. Particularly as AUS and IND will generally whitewash them. I can't see a scenario by which it isn't those two sides playing each other

Indeed, it was only Covid that allowed NZ to qualify for the first Final. I wonder how many India/Aus Finals it will take before the thing gets altered/abolished?

When England plays Australia in the WTC, leading into an Ashes it won't be that weird. It will kind of be old school cool, like when Australia would tour and play a tour game against a county stacked with many test players and up and comers. It will be great to say, we beat you in the ashes and trounced you in the WTC too, you useless dumbass side, if one side wins both. If it is split, then it will create glorious pages of debate over who's win means more. Thus it is, in a hypothetical world, because in reality, England is never making the WTC.

Would have invalidated it as a real championship even more, which is great. I hope it happens next time.

when it happens, they should merge it with the ashes and have the 6 test series as both ashes and wtc. this wouldnthen validate having the wtc being a series instead of a single game.
