Possibility that the Fifth test could be on free to view tv

If England can get to 2-2

The final Test of this summer’s Ashes series could be the first to be screened on free-to-air TV since 2005 – but only if England win at Old Trafford to set up a decider at The Oval.

i understands Sky Sports, who have had exclusive rights to Test cricket in the UK since 2005, are not ruling out the possibility of sharing their coverage with a terrestrial broadcaster if Ben Stokes’ team win the fourth Test in Manchester to level the series at 2-2.

Sky allowed both the 2019 World Cup final between England and New Zealand at Lord’s and last year’s T20 World Cup final between England and Pakistan in Melbourne to be shown live on Channel 4.

Now it seems a similar deal could be struck if this summer’s blockbuster series, currently 2-1 to Australia after three nail-biting Tests, goes down to a decider at The Oval later this month.

The release of Sky’s viewing figures for the first three Tests has illustrated just how much this pulsating series is capturing the public’s imagination, with viewing figures up 45 per cent on the first three Tests of the 2019 home Ashes.

England’s dramatic three-wicket win in the third Test at Headingley averaged 965,000 viewers over four days – Sky’s highest-ever viewing figures for a Test match. The final day in Leeds also saw the third-highest Ashes peak audience, with 2.5 million people tuning in despite the fact it was up against the British Grand Prix and Wimbledon.

Average viewing of the third Test was up 56 per cent against the third Test of 2019, also at Headingley and an epic game England won by one wicket thanks to a brilliant unbeaten Stokes century.

With Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum stating that their aim is to help revive Test cricket, any offer by Sky to allow the series finale to reach a wider audience would be popular with the team.

The potential audience that could be unlocked if The Oval Test was made freely available could surpass the 4.5m who watched the 2019 World Cup Final on Channel 4 and the 7.4m who tuned into the final day of the 2005 Ashes at The Oval, also screened by Channel 4.

Sky ruled out showing the final match of the 2019 Ashes on free-to-air TV, claiming sharing the rights to the World Cup final earlier that summer was a “once in a generation” gesture.

Yet they did so again last November when England reached the T20 World Cup final in Australia and although showing Test cricket over five days potentially presents more of a logistical issue with schedules than a one-off final, the demand from viewers would make the prospect appealing to domestic broadcasters. 

How’s the cricket set up in England on tv? Do you guys get any matches free to air? We use to get all the Australia home matches in the summer free to air plus the big bash and for the world cups use to get all the Aussie matches and semi finals and final.

Then a few years ago they got bought out by a company called Foxtel the subscription tv here. So now we only get all the home test matches free to air and only a select amount Odis and t20. about half the big Bash is free, Ashes and world test championship final is free to air also

If they’re going to do the WC final then why not

Be interesting how C4 handle it on weekdays if so. One of their shortcomings back in the day was shunting short periods onto Film4 and what not if there were things like racing on. Play also started earlier to accommodate The Simpsons and Hollyoaks

Only the Hundred is shown on FTA. And WC finals featuring England. Fortunately we’re regulars in the latter

kind of sucks then for people that don’t got sky. I was spewing when we lost the cricket on channel 9 here a few years ago and a lot of matches weren’t going to be free to air. Those cricket summers use to be the best here. Would watch every match and every ball as a kid

The 100 is shown on the bbc free and the bbc has the highlights for both the mens and woman’s ashes

Sky has the t20, 100 and all England men and women’s home games in all the formats live, plus the ipl and big bash

BT Sport which is changing to TNT Sports shortly are showing the Windies series starting next week, they also show cricket when it’s the Australian test matches summer

I see it’s not too bad. In Australia we’ve got good coverage free to air for our main sports. The more European and American sportswe don’t get much coverage off unless you pay for it. There’s also a lot of streaming websites that have taken over and bought the big leagues like premier league etc

I used to subscribe for all of it but it was around £110 a month so I gave up BT Sports

Now the Discovery channel is muscling in on Snooker which I love so I hope my package doesn’t rise again as they control Eurosport which shows a lot of snooker

genuinely had no clue the 100 was fta....still wont watch lol
I got the same feeling with big bash these days. Use to be so fun to watch and big crowds most games. Now it’s no where near as popular. I remember they once had 90k at the mcg for a Melbourne derby game with Kevin Peterson playing was crazy. The 100 doesn’t have enough balls for me to even bother

Should be 2 tests per summer on FTA TV minimum, and actually T20s as well. Kids will like that, I know they have the Hundred but that seems to have hardly captured the audience they wanted.
