Team of the Year…2022- Tests

Kenneth Viljoen

So he gets longevity points and point for skipping tests. Best of both worlds.
Have to commend the England selectors , they have taken care of Anderson really well and he has returned the favour in spades ...

1.Exclusive Test contract for a good 5-7 years now , which kept Anderson's fear factor kept in tact cause teams didn't have a hit at him in white ball cricket like they did for a Dale Steyn or other top test bowlers in the latter phase of their careers .

2.Rotation policy keeping Anderson fresh for the series he really cashed in on ..

Also Anderson has mastered Test Match Bowling. He doesn't go looking for wickets like he used to do in his 20's , if there is no swing he keeps it simple wicket to wicket and dries up the runs , he makes sure to take the new ball and to be there when there's a sniff of wrapping up the tail . This mature approach has led him to be a success on all types of wickets now .

A lot of Test bowlers might still have test careers if they were managed like how England manages Anderson , it's something all test nations should look at .

The trouble is that apart from the big 3 the pay packet for playing tests only is much lower as it is pay in general.

Very good point , I guess it's something Australia could look at then with regards to Cummins or Hazlewood ...Bumrah probably is gonna have to priotise one format soon or risk burnout .

Anderson was fuming to be left out of tests this year. He would have loved to play in West indies where he has a great record.
And him only playing tests is a weak arguement. He had played 194 odis and was 33 before he was told to give that up

Cummins looks a bit more picky to me than Anderson. Has played (46/114) 40% of Australia's test since his debut. Anderson at (177/254) 70% since his debut.
Couldn’t be because he played one test in 2011 and wasn’t selected again until 2017 due to injuries could it? Since then he’s played 45/49 matches.

They really need to wait until the end of the year to pick these teams. That Test team of the year looks like it was picked before the Boxing Day Test based on Rabada's figures there, as his average blew out by a couple of points in Melbourne.

Even worse was the Guardian who picked their team of the Year after the Multan Test of three weeks ago!

On another note, looking at Root's numbers for the year - I can't imagine there are too many instances in Test history of a bloke making five Test hundreds in a calendar year and still only averaging 40-odd. I think Gavaskar had a similar year in the early 1980s when India played a mountain of Tests but I'd be surprised if it had ever happened otherwise.

Speaking of % of tests played, Lyon’s at 92 consecutive tests for Australia. Next highest bowler is Kumble with 60.
Are you sure about this data ?
Because Kapil played 66 consecutive Tests for India , missed one then played 65 consecutive Tests for India

Lowest averages with 5 tons in a year

Root (2022) - 27 innings, 1098 @ 45.75 5 tons 2 fifties
Gavaskar (1983) - 32 innings, 1310 @ 46.78 5 tons 5 fifties
Pietersen (2008) - 20 innings, 1015 @ 50.75 5 tons 1 fifty
Vengsarkar (1979) 27 innings, 1174 @ 51.04 5 tons 6 fifties
Hayden (2005) 29 innings, 1380 @ 53.07 5 tons 4 fifties

Also just for fun what I would say is most impressive year with (only) 5 tons - haven’t looked at opposition or anything like that

Walcott (1955) - 10 innings, 8264 runs @ 82.64 5 tons 2 fifties
