Pinch hitters have been out of fashion since the days of Srinath coming in randomly in the mid-90s.

Throwback to the 00s here. Haven’t seen a pinch hitter In ODIs for ages.
Australia used to try it out with Brett Lee occasionally back in the day and it never worked haha. I would've totally considered 15 (9) "working" as well, but he always ended up with a **** SR to go with his early dismissal.

Like that.

Nah.. that was a good move, even if it didn't come off. It gets the opposition off their plans a little bit. Worth a shot now and then especially given how JAM this ODI series is. :)

social's blind hero worship of Steve Smith reaching ridiculous proportions here. That was completely him selling his captain a dummy.

Carey settling in nicely. Australia's batting lineup is just so good in these conditions.

Pinch hitters don't work any more (if they ever did) because slogging effectively is such an important part of modern one-day cricket. Players who are in the side to bat below the top four (or are actually useful lower order allrounders) have good enough shot selection to bunt and run as well as clear the ropes once or twice an over, which is how you get innings with 150+ srike rates. You will pretty much always have at least one of these guys down to bat 5-7 and they are better at pinch hitting than random bowlers.

If you are swinging and missing you might as well be just leaving the ball, so you end up with a ****** strike rate and waste time. Promoted pinch hitters (i.e. people whose wicket you don't value) are that because they're not actually good at pinch hitting.

Yes, but the effectiveness of the move is also what it does to the opposition. As I said, its worth a shot on the odd occassion.

love the pinch hitter idea. Regardless of how effective you think it is it's always good fun. If he had have made 10 (20) or something it's a definite failure, but a 3-ball duck is pretty neutral really.

Strange innings on a ground where Sharma mauled a century against the same opponent. Unless Aus think 320 or thereabouts is a safe total with their reinforced bowling?

What plans did it put them off? He was gone within the over he came in on, so it changed literally nothing.

Wasted three balls and a wicket.

I meant if he had gotten even one hit away. Plus you could see the amount of hand waving happening once they Starc stride out. There were some definite changes being talked about coz he is not gonna bat like Carey. Just because it did not work today does not mean it will never work. I am saying it again, it is something that is worth a shot once in a while.
