Brendon McCullum to retire after upcoming Australia series

Most of Richards runs seem to have come off the spin of John Emburey. This is no mean feet as Emburey was a wily and experienced campaigner by the mid-80s. The other bowlers were Botham, Ellison, and Foster. Not terrifying, but competent enough.

Not a lot between the Richards and McCullum tons I reckon. Although if Richard's had McCullum's bat....

It's not really close. McCullum's ton is easily superior. Came in at 3/30 in his final test on a greenish pitch against a strong attack with the series on the line, and he smashes the fastest hundred in history. Pretty insane.

Shame that that day one movement didn't stay around for very long at all. I suspect in years to come, people will look at the scorecard for this game and see 3 centuries inside two days and the context of the innings will be lost to a reasonable extent.

Whatever it takes!!!
A little bit of a tangent but have to say I have massive respect for Ryder deciding to stay away from the international game. As Jarrod Kimber so aptly put it, he is choosing to stay in the small town and make lesser money but have a more satisfying life. As someone who has taken a similar decision in a different field, I think it is wonderful. It is more important to be a good person to your family and community than to achieve the peak in your profession. Big respect to the man for making a tough choice.

except he probably makes more money playing county cricket than he would for NZ...

Even if that's true, I don't think it'd be true by a significant margin. Essex aren't flush with cash to throw around, which is one of the reasons why a number of their good homegrown youngsters have left for counties like Hampshire and Surrey.

Which this season was just for the T20, so I suspect isn't a vast sum either.

Compared to the additional cash he could attract if he was playing for NZ in T20s and thus more visible for international T20 (IPL, CPL etc.) contracts. I suspect he's marginally worse off not playing for New Zealand, but he'll be doing okay for himself.

getting back to Baz and Viv's fastest ton :

I would say modern day fielding offsets power of the bat.. in a small way at least..... looking at Richards video there are atleast 3 instances where the modern day fielder would have stopped it and the pitch ooph what a dead one..Even Kanpur is better :)..

Well, I dunno if that comment was meant for me but I have not said one word on Baz's innings or comparison to Viv's effort. I have not yet watched the innings (travel does that to you) and I have no idea on Viv's effort either except what I have read. Mine was a more general comment about someone passing off Viv's batting achievements in that era in the post directly above mine due to the "poorer" fielding quality.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Viv's was a second innings effort coming in at 1-100 with a lead of over 200. I'd say Viv had a bit of a freer hand.

What's his story? I thought he had alcohol issues.

search on cricinfo for Jarrod Kimber's piece on Jesse Ryder.. I am on the phone and the search doesn't work great off this. Will post link once home if you can't find it before then. It is an awesome piece. Basically Kimber points out how Ryder chose this lifestyle over the touring and disciplined life style of international cricket because this makes him happier.
