The Woes of NZC

BARNES OUT
**** off, I never said that the Black Caps were going to lose. I was just saying a few Indians were counting their chickens well before they hatched and they got bitten, and I was reminded of those comments by some in here.

Didn't realise India were beaten in a Test match TBH. Oh they weren't.

Sure they could beat us in an ODI potentially and I doubt any Kiwi here would deny the possibility. Yet we are favourites and heavy favourites when it comes to Tests.
Not often that happens is it?

All we need to do is play Vincent and Sinclair and watch them viciously minnow bash them into oblivion.

Thats true. Given recent form in tests though NZ will probably take no chances with Bangladesh and do their upmost not to underestimate them.

I bloody hope so anyway

The keepers are:

Central: Bevan Griggs
Wellington: Chris Nevin
Northern: Peter McGlashan
Auckland: Gareth Hopkins
Canterbury: Kruger Van Wyk
Otago: Derek De Boorder

I'd say Griggs is better than Hopkins who would be around the same as Nevin (though Nevin has been pretty good with the the bat this season IIRC). Van Wyk is a good prospect but needs to qualify for NZ first and Griggs is quite young IIRC. Personally I wouldn't be playing Hopkins unless I realy needed to.
Reece Young should really be Auckland's keeper there, will be interesting to see who gets the gloves when both he and Hopkins play. Griggs is 29 BTW, so not exactly young (no pun intended).

Yeah I thought Griggs had been around for a while. I used to do NZ four day and one day reports back in the day for CW and I certainly remember his name then as I do now. How many years does van Wyk left to go? Two or three?

I remember Griggs scoring a century against the Indians when the pitches were aweful here and that was five years ago so hes been around a while now.

Not sure on van Wyk, I haven't really seen much to be impressed by him so far though.

How I miss the days of Bond, Cairns, Nash, Parore, Harris, Fleming in ODI cricket. :(

And to think their direct replacements in the current side are no where close to these players.

Don't forget Twose, better than the lot of them for mine. And Astle too, and even McMillan.

And Geoff Allott in WC99 too of course. And Gavin Larsen, what a ODI bowler he was.

Not Terrible
I actually think if our team was fully fit for two years they'd be worth missing in the future.

Mills Bond Franklin Vettori Patel (depending on conditions)

There's a attack that could cause some trouble (and it doesn't even belong to Aus or SA!!!).

Yeah definately, them too. Surprised I forgot them.

and Martin Crowe retiring a good three/four years early too. So disappointing when you think of all the good players we've lost to injury over the years.

Its not bad, just the likelihood of it actually playing together consistently is so low.

Through Oram into that attack as well as another option.

Nash wasn't that great at ODI cricket. Averaged 40 with a high economy rate. The rest we will miss but we have some talented replacements for most of them.

Gavin Larsen was a great bowler for the period of cricket he played in..i dont think the dynamics of the game to day would suit such a player...

but i admit the grey wolf (larsen) was one of my favs..

bond at one end with the tight bowling of larsen would be pretty devastating nonetheless.....

I've always thought the meium pacers have been under utilised by us recently. We didn't select Harris, Scott is quite slow but gets movement and I think Hini is slow too IIRC. One of them at one end and mean nasty strike bowler at the other would be fun.

That said I prefer the spin twins, they need to be used almost every game. Such a gun combination.

If you're matey with the coach like the Marshalls you get a game.
Hamish Marshall did a decent job for a while for New Zealand though. Certainly compared to others tried. Up until his 39th match he was averaging over 35 in ODI cricket. And you really can't say Vincent was more deserving. Would doubt that Vincent ever had a 39-match period where he averaged over 35. Jack Marshall, I haven't seen really.

Say what you want about the lack of value of statistics. But if a player does not perform well at international level, you really can't truthfully determine him a quality international cricketer.

EDIT: No, I don't intend to read the entire thread to this point before commenting on a whim.

I agree, I also think he was a bloody good player at the start of his career and whatever Heath says, he had alot of ability. When he lost form however, he was persisted with for far too long ahead of others who were smashing the door down in domestic cricket.
