The next opponents were Surrey in the county championship. Surrey and Cricket Web had history from the National League 2 title race the previous year and the animosity had only increased during the close season as Mark Ramprakash had caught Mr Wright in bed with his wife. Sam Vimes also had an affair with Graham Thorpe’s wife but if the rumours are to be believed so has half of London. Surrey were leading the county championship with 3 wins from 3

So it was with Grim determination that CW travelled to the Oval, wholesale changes were made to the line-up, some enforced, some not. Out went Malone and Vimes on international duty, Cloete was injured, Chapman rested and Craze and Mr Wright were dropped. In came Brad Smith, Richards, Kearsley, Thomas, Hall and Weber.

Surrey won the toss and batted and despite 2 early wickets from Hall, Hollioake and Ramprakash smashed centuries to propel Surrey to 408 and put them in control. Richards was the pick of the bowlers with 5-95

In reply the CW openers both notched half centuries but neither went on and no-one lese passed 50, CW out for a disappointing 246 and asked to follow on.

Once again the openers got a good start but this time Brad Smith went on and scored his maiden FC ton, then he turned it into a double ton, with assistance from Weber who missed out on his own ton by just 1 and Bluefox who scored an unbeaten 56. CW declared at lunch on day 4 , 452-4 - setting Surrey 291 to win.

The win was out of Surrey’s hands but the batsmen didn’t play like it Reckless shots gifted Thomas 2 wickets and CW smelt blood, the in form Halsey tore in to the batting and ravaged the line-up, helped by Richards he took 6-66 and Surrey were out in the penultimate over of the match for 236, a great win.

This was your first match of the season as you were previously out with a back injury. As a result of this score you were selected for the Surrey CC match.

So, by the England selectors, I'm certain to be retained for the next game. Had I hit a fifty, however...

And I don't even have a clue how Graham Thorpe's wife looked like either. She's high on cod, I tell ye...

Staying down in London for the National League game proved a bit too much for one group of Cricket Web players and the coach lost his patience and made wholesale changes. Kings Cross is not the place for a professional cricketer at 4 in the morning before an important game. The men in question were Rueben Thomas, David Kearsley, David Hall and Nikhil Nichani. Chapman, more of a pipe and slippers person, returned and Patrick Nath came in to the side. Buggsy Malone was back from international seclection and Craze‘s twin centuries in the Seconds earned him a recall.

Surrey some how managed to drum up a healthy crowd but after this performance they wont be going back. Right from the start the CW were on the ball. Malone‘s return starting with 3 95mph in swinging Yorkers to clean bowl Ratcliffe, Thorpe and Ramprakash. Nath chipped in with 2 wickets and the pressure didn’t let off when Halsey and Chapman came on, the remaining 5 wickets were taken quickly and Surrey were destroyed for a paltry 96.

Someone went to wake the coach driver up coz they wanted a quick getaway - some of the players had hot dates planned. Eclipse and Brad Smith certainly wanted to get finished quick and it took just 10.3 overs in total, 2 wickets were lost and Smith hit 44 from 27, Eclipse hit an unbeaten 46 from 31 deliveries.

Another great win.

Impressive team effort! Must do wonders for our NRR too :D - for the match it was 7.41, and afaik ICC adds up all the NRRs (instead of the normal system of adding runs up and dividing by the overs).

The Web couldn’t have asked for a better run up to their crucial Quarter Final against Somerset. Everyone seemed to be on top form and there was a buzz about the club that everyone could feel. Even the news that Rueben Thomas was out for 3 week with a broken finger couldn’t dampen the spirits as they headed to Taunton.

An Unchanged side as expected and no hesitation in putting Somerset in when the toss was won.. Tight opening spells for Malone and Nath accounted for Trecothick and Wood and Somerset were just 53-2 after 15 overs. Again Haksey and Chapman were tidy and dangerous, Halsey perhaps the pick. Richards was also economical as Somerset just couldn’t get away. Nath came back to get the last 2 wickets to fnish with 3-20.

The reply was rapid again, Eclipse hitting 57 from 32 deliveries in a century opening stand with Smith who was unbeaten with 65 from 57, Craze was also unbeaten on 30.

Another awesome win and Yorkshire are our opponents in the Semis

During the run up to the next match CW were in the news as Shane Warrne was rumoured to be negotiating a deal to be next seasons overseas players. The CW board were forced to issue a statement denying the rumours, as follows:

‘Cricket Web are not in the habit of signing overseas players, especially not overweight and over the hill pie throwers like Warne. You can forget about Murali as well, the only straightening we will see around here will be from the Webettes doing their hair before the matches. We believe we have the best young players in the world and our spin options are well served by Chapman, Thomas, Halsey and Pickup - not to mention Cloete and Richards.’

Shane Warne was not available for comment.

On a roll the CW were to take on Kent in the County Championship. Kent won the toss and batted first. They batted well, only Paul Nixon being out in single figures. Midlane, Key and Patel hit half centuries and Kent racked up a formidable 421.The pick of the bowlers was Richards with 4.

Elcipse went early in reply but Brad Smith and Scott Craze and then Weber got some good runs. Smith hit a fine 80 but Weber was the star of the show with a century. He was ably supported down the order by Malone who hit a half century. However from 211-2 to be bowled out for 409 was quite disappointing..

Time had been lost to the weather and CW knew that to win the match they would have to skittle Kent early, but while no batsman looked comfortable they contrived to get the 20’s and 30’s required to make the game dead. They declared 6 down in the evening session with Malone the pick of the bowlers. Smith Craze and Weber then contrived to get out in the 23 overs remaining but the game finished a draw. 2nd in the Table

Vimes has been dropped from the Second Test and replaced with Jamee Gray. Malone keeps his place

Next up saw Cricket Web off for a spot of minnow bashing. Minor Counties name evokes thoughts of a slaughter or of Yorkshire. The ground was a dump and there weren’t any decent night clubs nearby (Ash Chaulk looked for the town on the internet - strangely lots of hits for inbreeding were found ). The team resolved to stop at an office on the way back and do some funnels on the coach on the way back before hitting the town.

The team was changed a lot as the squad players were given the opportunity to show what they could do, Nathan Hoy got his debut, Ash Chaulk made a rare appearance and there were recall for Jellett and Kearsley and Neil Pickup was selected for the first time this season.

Minor counties won the toss and put CW in to bat…Eclipse started them off well with 37 from 31 balls and they reached 136 for one before Chaulk fell for 19. Hoy on debut then was out for a golden duck ensuring a ribbing in the dressing room for a while yet. Weber also failed and they were suddenly 143-4. Jellett looked good when he came in though and he and Smith added 87 with Smith completing a century and Jellett a half century. Both were out soon after each other as was Kearsley but Halsey and Nath ensure they got past the 300 barrier, Halsey with 32 from 22.

From the way they started the reply you wouldn’t think they were a minor county, Mr Wright, Nath and Pickup were plundered for more than 6 an over during an opening stand of 110 from 16.5 overs before Pickup made the breakthrough. Halsey and Kearsley took the remaining 9 wickets in quick succession, 5-33 for the spinner and 4 wickets for the all rounder. In the end an easy win but not a great debut for Nathan Hoy.
