Mascot Grand National

One mascot who never looked likely to get a-head was AFC Telford's Benny the Buck.

Benny, alias Lez Dean, had his head pinched during a charity event in Nottinghamshire earlier this month and was forced to compete wearing a cardboard replacement.

Once again the race - in aid of Riding for the Disabled - was not without controversy, as the start had to be delayed as Sheffield United's Captain Blade - who hid halfway up the course to try and foil Chaddy's win last year - stood directly in front of Chaddy on the start line, refusing to move.

On finishing 2nd Chaddy said,
"I should have done better, but I lost all my focus after what happened at the start. I ran very badly and my hurdling was awful as I stumbled badly on four of the fences. I thought I'd try and break the hoodoo of our black kit, but it just wasn't to be. I know it's not exactly hard to run in a gorilla's costume, but I should have done a lot better. It was a very slow race, even with a strong tailwind and felt more like a jog, but I couldn't get going, but good luck to the Gorilla, I hope I can race him again."

Follow-up

I guess some people are just careless - or is that 'bearless'?

Sherwood Bear stolen from Forest
Nottingham Forest's mascot has been stolen from his home at the club's City
Ground, the club has revealed.
Sherwood the Bear was taken from the club's restaurant after a match against
Rotherham on 22 September.

Three youths were spotted on CCTV footage after the bear disappeared
following the Carling Cup tie, Nottinghamshire Police said.

Forest officials said they hope to find the costume so the mascot can attend
upcoming charity events.

A lot of children will be bitterly disappointed
Matt Eames, Nottingham Forest

Club spokesman Matt Eames said: "We realise it might be a prank that has
just gone a little bit too far, but it is important that we get Sherwood
back soon.

"He is unbelievably popular and if he is not returned soon we will have to
cancel hospital visits and appearances at charity events.

"A lot of children will be bitterly disappointed. "

The suit and two heads were stolen from a store cupboard in the Pitch Diner,
which is part of the City Ground, police said.

Benny the Buck

The three suspects are described as white males in their early 20s.

One was of medium build with short dark hair, wearing a green parka style
coat, and the second was also of medium build with short dark hair, wearing
a dark jacket and light trousers.

The third man was of medium build with short dark hair, wearing a brown
jacket and light trousers.

It is the second mascot hunt for Nottinghamshire Police in the past month.

They are also looking for the furry head of Benny the Buck, the mascot of
AFC Telford United, which was stolen in Newark three weeks ago.
