Indian Wells Masters
Qualifiers - 1st Round

It was a successful day in the California sunshine for CWLand competitors as the vast majority managed to qualify for the second round of the opening Master's event of the season at Indian Wells. First on court, qualifier Rob Bowenburg, managed to continue his impressive touch as he smashed wildcard Jimmy Holland in straight sets. Bowenburg, who lost just twelve games in his four qualifying sets, certainly looked the better player right from the start against the veteran American and pressed early to take a 3-0 lead. Using his deep lob to great effect, Bowenburg closed out the first set by breaking Holland's service for the third time to edge clear. From there it was all academic as Holland failed to match it with the world number 87 - Holland sealing a one-hour domination 6-2 6-1. Bowenburg now faces thirtieth seed Jason Bradley in the second round.

American born Roy Daniels also forced his way into the second round with an upset victory over Bahamas' Morton Blundell. The enigmatic Daniels used his powerful service to his advantage early as he only conceded four points on service in the first set. The advantage helped as he was able to force a break of his opponent's service in the final game to take the first set 6-4. It was a similar case in the second as Daniels again didn't offer any opportunities for Blundell to break serve - this time an early break helping him secure a 6-4 6-4 win. Jamee Hancianu also made a successful return from injury in his first round clash against Italian qualifier Massimo Prodi. Prodi's success in qualification came as a surprise to many, but his first round performance was equally as impressive against the world number 41. Ultimately, Hancianu showed he was fighting fit following his damaged shoulder - prevailing 6-4 7-5. The pair face very difficult second round clashes against players inside the world's top ten. Daniels has to contend with fifth seed Zhijun Sun of China, whilst Hancianu has the best clay courter in the world as his opponent - eighth seed Daniel Páez Blanco.

After a confidence-building victory in CWLand's Davis Cup match this past week, Heath Davis returned to form with a straight sets win over Croatia's Ivan Cesljar. The big serving CWLander started slowly against the Croat as he dropped serve early in the first set. But Davis managed to break back against the world number 50 to level the scores at 4-4 and, eventually, to a tiebreaker. It was there that the fiery Davis managed to get on somewhat of a roll and take the first set 7-6. Whilst Cesljar managed to claw his way back late in the second set, it was all too late for the Croat after he fell behind 4-0 early. Whilst he prevented being bagelled in the second set, he eventually fell 7-6(3) 6-4 to the CWLander. Davis now faces a match against 24th seed József Boros of Hungary in the second round.

In section eight, Randy Smeltz also continued his good touch with a tight win over Switzerland's Pascal Schmidt. After a tight opening set, which Smeltz won 7-5, the CWLander went from strength-to-strength as the Swiss veteran struggled to impose himself on the match. Surprisingly, the normally subdued Smeltz fired down twelve aces in the match which lasted just over ninety minutes - advancing to a second round clash with Wang Li with a 7-5 6-3 win. Unfortunately for Jojo Mustard and Billy Spleen, their tournaments came to a disappointing end in the first round. The qualifier Spleen struggled early against Vladimir Gryzlov and went on to drop the first set 6-2. The youngster put on a much better show in the second set, but, at 5-5, dropped serve at the worst possible time and was out of the tournament 6-2 7-5. Mustard, however, was more competitive against Portugal's Valter Cordiero. The two traded dominant sets to send the match to a decider, but Mustard just couldn't find his very best touch and missed out on a second round clash with Dwayne Murdoch following a 6-2 2-6 6-4 loss.

Good result against a tough opponent in the first round. Pretty happy with that. Another toughie in the next round, but hoping to knock out yet another higher ranked opponent. Underestimate Heef at your peril. Just as Heef always underestimates less well known opposition.

2nd Round - Indian Wells

In an action-packed second round at the Indian Wells Masters, CWLand players had mixed fortunes as one secured a massive upset, and another suffered the indignity of being 'double-bagelled' in his match. World number 82 Roy Daniels produced the upset of the day as he defeated fifth seed Zhijun Sun in straight sets to advance to the third round. Daniels came into the match as overwhelming underdog, but quickly asserted himself in the match as he broke Zhijun's service early. Taking the first set 6-3 with some very steady tennis, Daniels pressed his advantage into the second set and again edged ahead 2-0. Whilst Zhijun broke back, the highly ranked youngster's confidence was clearly shot and a lazy overhead smash had him staring down the barrel of a loss. After breaking serve, Daniels' nerve proved enough as he secured a 6-3 6-4 win and a third round clash with 28th seed Becker Haas.

Also successful was 22nd seed Brett Read who produced a steady display against big-serving Norwegian Haiku Morkel. Despite being broken early, Read fought back against Morkel to get the unlikely break of service twice to seal the first set 7-5. The normally impenetrable weapon of Morkel faltered and soon the world number 47 was packing his bags as Read grew from strength-to-strength as the second set wore on. In just over an hour and twenty minutes, Read set up a bumper third round clash with Davis Kennedy with a 7-5 6-2 win. Another big scalp for the CWLanders came in section 5 as Jamee Hancianu upset eighth seed Daniel Páez Blanco. The veteran Spaniard again struggled to impose himself on the faster surfaces and duly suffered as Hancianu produced a dominant display in the first set. The Romanian-born CWLander had things tougher in the second set, but prevailed in the tiebreaker to seal an unlikely 6-3 7-6(4) victory.

If all goes to plan, a fourth round clash between Hancianu and Sven Oxenstierna awaits as the CWLand number 1 proved too strong for Turkey's Aksu Emrem. Oxenstierna was pushed in his first match of the tournament by the grizzled Turk - the pair trading tight sets to send the match into a decider. But Oxenstierna continues to prove he is good on surfaces outside of his clay court stomping ground as he rallied in the third to clinch a tight 6-3 4-6 7-5 victory. The Ox now faces American 17th seed Morgan Carter in the third round.

On the other side of the coin, 14th seed Jefferson Drake's post Delray Beach slump continued as he bowed out in three sets to Switzerlands's Almen Benaglio. Drake again looked out of sorts and struggled to find his range against the Swiss 23-year old as he dropped the first set 6-3. Drake managed to regain some touch in the second, but a late break forced him to the wire - eventually edging clear 7-5. But in the decider, Benaglio found his second wind and raced to an unassailable 4-0 lead to seal a fantastic 6-3 5-7 6-4 victory. It was a similar story for Heath Davis who also fell in three sets. Facing 24th seed József Boros, Davis struggled early against the quiet Hungarian. In a tight opening set, Davis unfortunately double faulted at a crucial time to hand the Hungarian the first set - but the disappointment seemed to increase the big-serving CWLander's confidence as he raged back into the match to claim the second set 6-0. But ever the professional, Boros didn't let the loss faze him as his superior fitness helped him through a marathon third-set tiebreaker to seal an amazing match 7-5 0-6 7-6(10).

Twentieth seed Li Wang was forced to come back from a set down to defeat CWLand's Randy Smeltz in section 8 of the draw. Smeltz took the opener 7-5 and looked in a good position early in the second set as he found himself ahead on Li's service with two break points. But the Chinese ace managed to keep some steel about him (unlike his compatriot Zhijun) and not only held service - but broke back to set up a second set win. Whilst the decider went to a tiebreaker, Li's superior experience allowed him to take a relatively easy breaker to advance to the third round 5-7 6-4 7-6(2). For qualifier Rob Bowenburg... the less said the better. He was dispatched by 30th seed Jason Bradley in straight sets - 6-0 6-0.

Seeds Out: 5-Zhijun Sun (CHN); 6-Rasmus Olesen (NOR); 8-Daniel Páez Blanco (ESP); 14-Jefferson Drake (CWL); 15-Juan Moreno (ARG); 18-Dwayne Murdoch (USA); 25-Ross Onwye (MAR); 26-Maarten Berg (NED); 31-Tom Vollan (NOR).

Disappointing from Davis & Drake there. Daniels and Hancianu doing CWLand proud though. Straight down the gym to work on the old stamina, I think.

The final two CWLanders in the main draw will face off in the Indian Wells fourth round as Sven Oxenstierna and Jamee Hancianu advanced with impressive victories in the third round of the Indian Wells Masters. Oxenstierna was most impressive as he pushes for a maiden career title; the twelfth seed overcoming seventeenth seed Morgan Carter in straight sets. After taking the first in a tight tiebreaker, Oxenstierna pressed on as Carter faltered in the second. After blowing two match points on his service, The Ox eventually prevailed 7-6(5) 6-3. It was a tougher ask for Hancianu who toiled in the sun against Toby Brookes. Hancianu took the first set 7-5, but the score line was reversed in the second as the Australian fought back well. But Hancianu, who upset Daniel Páez Blanco in the second round, proved too strong in the decider - advancing 7-5 5-7 6-3. The winner of the fourth round match will face off against the winner of Boros-Henson in the quarterfinals.

Elsewhere, the dream run for unseeded Roy Daniels came to a screeching halt as he was turfed out in straight sets by 28th seed Becker Haas. Haas took little over twenty minutes to take the first set 6-0, and whilst Daniels put on a better show in the second set, he was ultimately beaten 6-0 7-5. Brett Read also fell to higher ranked opposition as tenth seed Davis Kennedy prevailed in three sets. In a match of quickly changing momentum, the two traded dominant sets before Kennedy cranked up the pressure on the steady Read. Whilst Read wasn't completely outclassed, he struggled to create anything against the service of Kennedy and was eliminated 6-3 3-6 6-2.

Seeds Out: 1-Jason Hall (USA); 9-David Champion (AUS); 11-Illya Altman (UKR); 13-Tiago Matias (POR); 17-Morgan Carter (USA); 19-Carlo Amato (ITA); 22-Brett Read (CWL); 29-Dmitry Orlov (RUS); 32-Diego Hurtado (COL).

Top dog falls in Indian Wells boilover

World number one Jason Hall has suffered just his second Open Era loss as he was sensationally knocked out in three sets by thirtieth seed Jason Bradley in the third round of the Indian Wells Masters. The American Bradley took it right to his compatriot in the first set and took an unlikely one-set to love lead after a tight tiebreaker. But Hall managed to recover from the early blow in determined fashion, as he broke the serve of Bradley twice to take the set in comfortable style and, up 3-0 in the third, looked to have the match in the bag. But a contentious line call handed the world number 33 a much-needed break of serve and he proceeded to level the set at 3-3 against the shaken Hall. With the decider going to another tiebreaker, Bradley surprised all in attendance to produce a fantastic upset - advancing to a fourth round clash with 16th seed Miroslav Brdar 7-6(5) 2-6 7-6(3).

Sven Oxenstierna has firmed as a massive chance in this tournament after a dominant fourth round win over fellow CWLander Jamee Hancianu to book a quarterfinals showdown against József Boros of Hungary. The twelfth seed took little over an hour and a half to dispatch the unseeded Hancianu - his game vastly superior than his teenage opponent. Hancianu stuck close to the world number twelve to be level in the first set 2-2. But after the youngster failed to capitalise on a rare break point against The Ox, he capitulated to lose ten of the next thirteen games against his quality opponent. With an ace, Ox sealed a comfortable victory 6-4 6-1 to advance to the Indian Wells quarterfinals.

Seeds Out: 3-Rick Henson (USA); 4-Darcy Cowan (USA); 20-Li Wang (CHN); 21-Wayne Boyd (USA); 23-Zoltan Varga (HUN); 28-Becker Haas (GER); 30-Jason Bradley (USA).

Bad day for USA as local hopefuls fall

Where they started the day with four of the final sixteen, Team USA crashed and burned in the fourth round of Indian Wells as all four Americans fell - two of which looked to have left the tournament wide open for second seed Radek Špidla of the Czech Republic. Among the casualties, third seed Rick Henson who was upset by Hungarian 24th seed József Boros in three sets. Henson and Boros traded sets before the Hungarian continued his ascent up the rankings with a fighting third set performance. Fourth seed Darcy Cowan also fell - unseeded Swiss youngster Almen Benaglio proving too strong from the wonderkid from Wyoming. The former All-American rarely troubled the Swiss ace despite the score line, falling 6-4 7-6(3).

Sven Oxenstierna has moved one step closer to winning his first tournament of the Open Era as set up an appetising semifinal clash with seventh seed Radivoj Daneu in the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Masters. Pitted against 24th seed József Boros of Hungary, the CWLand number one proved too good as he prevailed in straight sets. Level at 3-3 in the first set, Oxenstierna drew first blood against his Hungarian counterpart as he broke service in the seventh game with his third break point. The break proved to be the difference between the two as The Ox went on to take the first set 6-4. Though labelling himself as a clay-court specialist, Oxenstierna went from strength to strength against the struggling Boros and proved far too strong in the second set - running out 6-4 6-3 winner. He will face his toughest opponent in the semifinal, though, as his Serbian opponent looked in inspired touch with a victory over second seed Radek Špidla of the Czech Republic.

Seeds Out: 2-Radek Špidla (CZE); 10-Davis Kennedy (CAN); 24-József Boros (HUN); 27-Henry Charles (GBR).

Swiss youngster looks to cause boilover

He might be ranked sixty in the world, but Swiss 23-year old Almen Benaglio is just one match away from competing for the Indian Wells Masters crown following an upset 6-3 5-7 6-4 win over tenth seed Davis Kennedy. In a tight match, the Canadian struggled against the impressive youngster and ultimately fell apart at the worst possible moments. Benaglio will face off against sixteenth seed Miroslav Brdar in undoubtedly the biggest match of his career. Brdar, who has claimed the scalps of Jason Bradley and Carlo Amato, continued his charge to an unlikely finals berth with a straight sets win over Brit Henry Charles.
