Brett Lee keeping it tight lately, but struggling with wicket-taking. A real concern for me.

(A Gilchrist 99* [84], M Hayden 91* [116])

Result: Australia won by 10 wickets
Man of the Match: A Gilchrist

Really rough luck for Gilly. This is still my most satisfying ODI win to date though, for obvious reasons.

Pitch Nothing for the seamers, help for the spinners.
Toss: Australia (Bat)

Australia XI
J Maher +
M Hayden
R Ponting *
S Watson
M Bevan
M Clarke
A Symonds
G Hogg
J Gillespie
N Bracken
G McGrath

Debut: S Watson

Maher gives Gilchrist a rest. Shane Watson comes in for his first international. Hogg and Bracken in for Warne and Lee.

England XI M Ramprakash, M Atherton, G Thorpe, G Hick, J Crawley, A Giles, S Guy, D Cork, D Gough, A Caddick, M Saggers.

Australia innings 286/4 (50 overs)
(R Ponting 116* [112], M Hayden 61 [49], M Bevan 43 [42])
(J Brown 2/45 [10], A Caddick 0/82 [10])

Jimmy Maher got his highest ODI score - 39, but it was the skipper once more who got the job done. 11 runs unbeaten from 5 balls for Watson on debut.

England innings 237 ao (43.5 overs)
(M Atherton 52 [68], G Thorpe 51 [56])
(G Hogg 3/52 [10], N Bracken 2/34 [9.5])

Very pleased with the way the backup bowlers stood up. Hogg gets career-best figures. 4-0-32-0 for Watson though - disappointing. He had his 3rd ball dropped by Maher though - Thorpe.

Result: Australia won by 49 runs
Man of the Match: R Ponting

Australia VS. India

Conditions:
Weather Bright and sunny all day long.
Pitch Nothing for the seamers, nothing for spinners.
Toss: Australia (Bat)

Australia XI
A Gilchrist +
M Hayden
R Ponting *
S Watson
M Bevan
M Clarke
S Katich
G Hogg
J Gillespie
N Bracken
B Lee

Gilchrist back in for Maher. Watson and Bracken retained and Lee and Katich are in for McGrath and Symonds.

India XI S Ramesh, D Bundela, S Tendulkar, V Kambli, V Laxman, S Karim, A Agarkar, G Dutta, A Kumble, N Singh, M Kartik.

Australia innings 263/5 (50 overs)
(M Hayden 82 [71], S Watson 48* [67], S Katich 46* [25])
(M Kartik 2/36 [10], D Mohanty 2/57)

After an opening partnership of 112 in the first 16 overs, Gilchrist (44), Ponting (0) and Clarke (0) fell in quick succession until Bevan (39) and Hayden (82) steadied the ship, then Katich and Watson batted impressively at the end for a good total.

India innings 235 ao (46.4 overs)
(R Dravid 63 [69], A Agarkar 54 [77])
(B Lee 4/34 [10], S Watson 2/24 [2.4])

Bowling first change, Brett Lee was refreshingly among the wickets again, claiming Tendulkar (6) and Ramesh (13) in his first over, the Laxman (8) in his 3rd. Still, the batting of Agarkar late in the innings was enough to give me a scare until Watson broke through to his stumps.

Result: Australia won by 28 runs
Man of the Match: B Lee

VB Final Game 1
Australia VS. India

Conditions:
Weather Bright and sunny all day long.
Pitch Nothing for the seamers, slight turn for spinners.
Toss: Australia (Bat)

Australia XI
A Gilchrist +
M Hayden
R Ponting *
D Lehmann
M Bevan
S Katich
A Symonds
S Warne
J Gillespie
B Lee
G McGrath

Lehmann replaces the out-of-form Clarke and Symonds comes in for Watson. Katich retains his place following his whirlwind 46 in the last game and McGrath replaces Bracken.

India XI S Ramesh, D Bundela, S Tendulkar, V Kambli, V Laxman, S Karim, A Agarkar, G Dutta, A Kumble, N Singh, M Kartik.

Australia innings 274/4 (50 overs)
(A Gilchrist 87 [83], M Bevan 80* [66])
(R Pawar 2/55 [10])

Another good opening partnership of 60odd, but the real boost came from Bevan smashing the bowling late for an unbeaten 80. At the top, Gilchrist continued his fine form with an innings of 87 (dropped on 2) and at the end, Symonds hit 27* from 12 balls to set the total nicely.

India innings 228 ao (41 overs)
(V Kambli 48 [42], R Dravid 44 [57])
(G McGrath 3/44 [10], S Warne 2/45 [7], B Lee 2/46 [6])

The attitude of the Indians to the chase was quite refreshing, attacking at every opportunity, but alas it was not enough. McGrath started with 4-0-24-0 but returned in the 30th over to bowl his next 6 for 20 runs and taking 3 wickets. With that burst it was smooth sailing for the Aussies from then in.

Result: Australia won by 46 runs
Man of the Match: A Gilchrist
Finals: Australia lead 1-0 (3)

Toss: India (Bat)

Australia XI
J Maher +
M Hayden
R Ponting *
M Clarke
M Bevan
S Katich
S Watson
G Hogg

Clarke, Maher, Bracken and Hogg in for Martyn, Gilchrist, McGrath and Warne.

India XI S Ramesh, D Bundela, S Tendulkar, V Kambli, V Laxman, S Karim, G Dutta, A Kumble, N Singh, J Srinath, M Kartik.

India innings 259/4 (50 overs)
(S Tendulkar 76 [96], S Ramesh 64 [116])
(J Gillespie 2/48 [10])

Not quite the bowling performance hoped for, but it wasn't the worst given it's a second string attack put up there. Bracken (10-0-42-0) and Hogg (10-1-46-0) did a useful job in rare appearances. Watson (4-0-30-1) lost the plot a bit though.

Australia innings 255/6 (50 overs)
(M Hayden 101 [102], S Watson 58* [54], J Maher 45 [82])
(A Kumble 2/69 [10], M Kartik 2/68 [10])

Only 10 runs from the first 10 overs meant that the batsmen had to go after the spinners, which is not the easiest of tasks. Still it was an admirable fightback and 10 runs were needed from the last overs, but it was just a bit too much. Streak over.

Result: India won by 4 runs
Man of the Match: M Hayden
Finals: Australia wins 2-1 (3)
Man of the Finals: M Hayden
Man of the Series: M Hayden
