Just for that, I would have a full strength team for the important events, and a toned-down team for the Bangladesh series. That way, player burnout would be reduced and some fringe players get some experience.
Out of the top 5 in the batting lineup, just two of them should play. Dravid is definitely not needed here, since he will have a lot of innings-building (and wicketkeeping) to do against Australia and SA. Sachin also needs a little rest. Ganguly, given his injuries, may need a break, too. That leaves Laxman and Sehwag, giving them a good opportunity to take the lead. The players to fill in can be Gautam Gambhir, Akash Chopra, Yuvraj Singh, Mithun Manhas and Sodhi/Rohan Gavaskar.
The bowling will definitely need rest, so Kumble (in particular), Harbhajan and Zaheer, if they are worn out, will stay out of this series. Let Bhandari, Balaji and Pathan get a chance to take the lead in this series. It will also give Ramesh Powar a good chance to show the selectors what they have been missing for a very long time. Young Amit Mishra has been rather impressive, so he too should get an opportunity. The bowling of Sehwag and Rohan should be used regularly, to keep them in action.
The balancing of skills of a few players can also be used fully in this series. They have nothing to gain by playing this series, and probably nothing to lose, so why not take a few risks? These ideas can be used everytime the Indians play an exhibition series or any other such meaningless event. Not only do players get rest, but a reserve bench is also developed, just like the teams picked by Sri Lanka and England and also Australia. Ultimately, whether they are the first choice or reserves, the players picked have to play positive, attacking cricket.
