The Inaugural World Test Championship

And so this test championship begins. I wonder if we’ll see Career Average and ICC WTC Average?

According to latest ICC Test Championship rules it seems that the teams which have more than 2 matches in series have more chances to get good points. If a team has two matches in a series than it have to win match to get 50% of points but if the team loose the match it will also loss the points. On the other hand, if a team has 5 matches in a series than losing a match will give less loss to points table. ICC should review its rules

The early and mid-2000s

Unsurprisingly, Australia would have dominated the league in the early and mid-2000s, under Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting, but, interestingly, India would have snuck in a top-place finish during their second cycle. This is because India under Sourav Ganguly, between 2002 and 2005, played consecutive away series against Pakistan, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe and consecutive home series against Zimbabwe, West Indies and New Zealand, winning five of those series. Meanwhile, Australia, around the same period, had a much harder schedule, playing both India and New Zealand home and away, an away Ashes, and a home series against Sri Lanka. Mind you, this is when Australia famously beat India on their patch, hailed as their conquering the final frontier, but that series would only have fetched them 70 points, while India's 2-0 victories home and away against Zimbabwe would have fetched 120 points each. Australia would not even have qualified for the final in that cycle, as 3-0 victories over New Zealand at home and West Indies away, a home Ashes win, and an away series win in South Africa would have put England in second place. This kind of cycle is exactly what fans are afraid will lead to undeserving finalists in the Test Championship.

I like the idea of this but the points system seems completely garbage to me. I'm going to be so enraged at it.

Even Pakistan might fluke it, they got nice 2-match series vs. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at home.

2 test series would be risk v reward tho surely? if you get jumped, **** up, it buckets down or you suck, you miss out on one of your few chances for a big haul of points.

plus i'll never feel sorry for england again after the jammy luck they and the umpires pulled all game in the cancelled final. stuff them.

Yeah it can go both ways. But, ideally, a two-match home series against weaker opposition is where teams can pick up maximum points with minimum effort.

Any "championship" should ideally have an itinerary where every team plays every other team the same number of times home and away. Any points system that disincentivizes longer series is not just a bad system but actively harmful to test cricket. The number of classic test series over the past few years we could've had only to be left without a satisfying conclusion because they couldn't be bothered to schedule a 3rd test has been stupid.

Yeah, Pakistan should've been given another test instead of the traditional drawn out drubbing of India at the hands of England.

I occasionally visit PP for a bit of fun. India's rubbish performances in Eng and Pak's better performances are talked a lot there. Would have been robbed of all those fun moments if this would have happened.

Only performances in and vs. England count as far as they are concerned.

Nah India's drawn out drubbings against England are putting Moeen's (future?) kids through college
