People compain about Giles in similar circumstances...
Yes, and in this match he showed us why we're wrong to do so.
He doesn't often get the chance to do his thing, but he doesn't do it badly when the chance comes along. It's unlikely that he and Hoggard will do well in the same match, and we play more matches in which Hoggard will be more useful than Giles is.
In the intervals between his being useful with the ball, his handy number eight batting skills make him the best occupant of what is essentially a case marked "In emergency, break glass".
I think there's been a bit of a change of thinking by the captains, too, which has helped him. He's mostly been used over the last few years after all the pace bowling options have been tried, usually twice over, and failed to make any significant dents, so he has always been faced by batsmen who are well set and ready to rumble. Both at Lord's and at Trent Bridge, he was given the ball early in the innings and used as an attacking option, even if SLA over the wicket is essentially a defensive style of bowling. That's a confidence-builder which I think was reflected in more enterprising bowling from him.
I think he's reminded us why he's there, and I doubt I shall be calling for his removal from the side any time soon (although I might still question the value of picking him at Headingley).
He may not be very good, but he does OK.
Cheers,
Mike
