Over rated Vettori?

his injury may be a blessing in disguise. there is no way you can justify selecting him in the national team. you cant afford to carry players around at test level. vetorri is about the 4th best spinner in nz imo.
And who is the other top 3?

Jeethan Patel, Paul Wiseman, and Bruce Martin?

consider him as an allrounder...he is quite a handy batsman to have
Still averages 30.94 with the bat over the last 15 matches, 39.33 over the last 10. Brilliant stats for someone considered a bowler!

Unfortunately I'd not be surprised if his bowling average is similar. :p

yep - along with Cairns, Oram, Styris, McCullum....................

too many 'allrounders' of varying degrees of reliability / consistency, and not enough bloody 'specialists' to get one job done or the other..........

well if it makes much of a difference, cairns will be gone soon and styis is more of a batsmen who can bowl.....i dont see the need to drop vettori unless there is someone who is considerably better than him with the ball.

Bowling average is closer to double that..

56.81 in his last 15, and 76.62 (!) in his last 10
and with those seamer friendly wickets at home you expect him to come up with averages of under 30?

Tour of India and SL included weren't they?
The pitches in that NZ-India series were dead and didnt offer anything to the bowlers. I thought he bowled pretty well on that tour given the conditions.

Either way, it's still pretty poor, but I'm not that worried right now, because I'm starting to put a little more faith in him lately.

People compain about Giles in similar circumstances...

For the last couple of seasons Wiseman has struggled to even hold the place as first choice spinner for Canterbury. Quite a few times I've seen Wiseman as 12th man and the spinner C.Anderson playing in his place.

Yes, and in this match he showed us why we're wrong to do so.

He doesn't often get the chance to do his thing, but he doesn't do it badly when the chance comes along. It's unlikely that he and Hoggard will do well in the same match, and we play more matches in which Hoggard will be more useful than Giles is.

In the intervals between his being useful with the ball, his handy number eight batting skills make him the best occupant of what is essentially a case marked "In emergency, break glass".

I think there's been a bit of a change of thinking by the captains, too, which has helped him. He's mostly been used over the last few years after all the pace bowling options have been tried, usually twice over, and failed to make any significant dents, so he has always been faced by batsmen who are well set and ready to rumble. Both at Lord's and at Trent Bridge, he was given the ball early in the innings and used as an attacking option, even if SLA over the wicket is essentially a defensive style of bowling. That's a confidence-builder which I think was reflected in more enterprising bowling from him.

I think he's reminded us why he's there, and I doubt I shall be calling for his removal from the side any time soon (although I might still question the value of picking him at Headingley).

He may not be very good, but he does OK.

Cheers,

Mike

Anderson's record suggests he's even less effective than Wiseman though. That said, he's considerably younger.

Interestingly, Wiseman has a similar FC record to Vettori with an almost equal average.

Vettori in his last couple of test matches has actually bowled quite well & has been extremely unlucky at times.
I'd be tempted to say to Dan that he should take the rest of the year off & come back refreshed for the Sri Lankan series here.
But that means we'll have a rather large hole for the 2 tests in Australia...maybe we should give Bruce Martin a go. Australia don't exactly enjoy left arm orthodox bowlers.
