Fairbrother was a top class ODI batsman, right up there with Michael Bevan

Twose wasn’t good enough to play for England and buggered off to New Zealand where, briefly, he had a bit of good fortune

There’s no real comparison to be made

Tell me more about England's odi standing in world cricket of the 1990's Fred :P

Since Gatting's reverse sweep and the 2015 World Cup - how would you say England fared vis a vis NZ in ICC events?

Selector preference is not really good reason disqualify the comparison.

It is a bit like saying Wagner cannot be compared to any Safrican bowler because he buggered off to NZ and briefly had some good fortune.

And yet - believe it or not - with 2 more years like his last 2, he is seriously chasing down someone of the quality of Morne Morkel level.

Can't remember tbh, but I accept we were pretty poor, as evidenced by the fact that a batsman who generally looked like a club cricketer in Test matches was far and away our best ODI batsman

On the bright side, your test team's best middle order bat this summer may be a t20 slogger with a license at 7.

Things are on the up and up. ;)

Fairbrother had 2 purple patches, several years apart.

His first one was from mid 91 to 93 where he scored 922 runs from 23 innings @ 51.22. This included the 1992 WC where he performed tremendously

Then after his recall in late 98 til just before the 99 WC he scored 371 runs from 8 innings @ 92.75

Twose had one, extended run of super form from the beginning of 1999 to the end of 2000 where he hit 1858 runs from 42 innings @ 56.30. This included the 1999 WC where he performed tremendously
