South Africa team selection

Kenneth Viljoen

International Debutant
Does anyone else remember that random SA spinner who took 10fer and made a 100 in the same fc game last year?
Yes , Sean Whitehead ...Kinda sad that he's still stuck in provincial cricket , I kinda wish these cricketers could move abroad and get the opportunities their talent deserves , it worked out alright for Conway

He averages 40 with the bat and 23 with the ball in 4 day cricket , he plays for SWD a division 2 FC side in SA , if he had a different name he'd probably be playing for a top domestic side . I first saw him in the U19 SA side , he looked a decent left arm offie , we've got a lot of those in SA .spinning all rounders find it tough to be taken seriously, George Linde gets treated harshly at national level aswell for some reason .

wasn't Conway just bad when he played at higher level in SA domestics? without the coaching in NZ he may have not been this good internationally tbh

Yeah but he moved for a better opportunity that was my point , Whitehead is not being given opportunities despite playing well so should consider his options ..

Some really exciting players in that squad. Would have liked to see poetgieter get a go but brevis, jones and de swardt all getting game time is great.
Potgieter is in North west's 4 day team so wouldn't have been available. Only players made available by their provinces were considered.
North West are fighting with free state for relegation.

Strange that 100 runs Parsons wasn't kept by natal.

wild that Brevis 1st fc match will be against West Indies. has any other player ever had their 1st ever fc match against an international team?
Unofficial or not , that he's playing red ball cricket is a good sign , it shows he is open to playing red ball cricket in South Africa , he could quite easily be a T20 gun for hire around the world exclusively, which is not ideal .

Apparently he has said that he wants to play test cricket, and I think that holds true for a lot of the younger players. This is the generation that grew up watching South Africa at its test peak, so that's instilled a desire to play test cricket. Whether that desire is going to withstand the lure of the T20 megabucks is another matter, but for now the dream of a test cap is still very much a thing for many players.

going t20 gun at his age is extremely risky even with the proliferation of t20 leagues in recent times. a couple of bad seasons and/or injuries mean you are out of favour with no safety net to fall back on

Sarel Erwee enjoying his return to domestic cricket 112 off 125 ..He never tried to bat like that even once at test level , got to stay true to yourself no matter what I say .

7 fer for b swanepool in the most recent games with 8 more wickets to take, currently tied with maharaj for most wickets in the season and has the most by a pacer by 5. Should be playing with SA soon, seems like a real talent. He can bat aswell, don't think he's an international #7 but would be nice to have the extra bit of batting 8 and under with jansen at 7.

Has to get past Coetzee and don’t see that happening soon. Maybe if SA have a few injuries on the pace bowling front.

I rate coetzee and know he's been in the past few red ball squads but should he be ahead of swanepool? Swanepool has 80 wickets @18, coetzee has 50 @ 30, swanepool averages 29 with the bat, coetzee averages 14. Swanepool has 23 wickets @15 in div 1 this year, coetzee has 11 @36 even with his 5fer the other day.
