South Africa team selection

Second.. its in his name, right? :)
That is so bad....

There's a debate going on, on one of the cricket pages I follow on FB about who is next in line for the WK position after QDK.

Things are a bit quiet at work so I put together the franchise stats of Mosehle, Second, and Klaasen.

Mosehle, after 49 games, averages 19.2 (and before this season he was averaging 17). Second's average, after 42 games is 38.9, while Klaasen averages 31.6 after ten games.
Seconds avg for this year though is 49...
The sunfoil stats are actually quite interesting reading..Domestic | Sunfoil Series | Averages | 2016/17 - SuperSport - Cricket

And how close must Mulder be for selection, I know he is young but the way he continues to play.... SA don't mind bringing in quality youngsters.

Seconds is apparently not the best keeper. Though I wasn't very impressed with Mosehle's glove work in the 20/20s and batting wise, he hasn't done anything in FC cricket. I like what I saw of Klaasen. Plays a lot like Martin Guptill and looks like him as well.

That's an awful thing to say.

So how do you guys like the SA team selection for the ODI`s atm.... I feel a little concerned that we are a genuine batsmen short? I know that sounds strange but my feelings of Morris, Parnell and Phehlukwayo at 7,8 and 9, is mixed.

orris has bowled well and he is a fantastic striker of the ball but I don`t know if he could bat 20 overs if we get into trouble; I would rather like to see him at 8. Parnell is taking wickets and doing well... but just don`t trust him to, I don`t like how he bowls into the pads and also bowls a bit wide sometime, I feel better quality batsmen may take him apart. But his batting is probably capable of lasting 20 overs coming in at 7? Phehlukwayo has done his job relatively well, bowling wicket to wicket, but has not looked penetrative.. we know he can hit a long ball but no opportunity at the moment, but should a player sitting at no 9 in the team not be a more aggressive attacking bowling option?

I do feel that Pretorius should be playing in place of Phehlukwayo, which is tough cause he has not done anything wrong, and that would also solve my concerns at no 7.....but we all know why that is not gonna happen. And I am still waiting for Parnell to implode....

can't remember the last time Duminy managed a win for SA in ODIs. He threw the wicket again. SA need to move on from Duminy.

Kock
Amla
Faf
De Bryun
AB
Miller
Pretorius
Morris
Parnell/Ngidi
Rabada
Tahir

If only Russow and Abbott were still available...

Duminy made two fifties in the series against Australia, during which he averaged 41.80. So I don't know that it's time to talk about moving on from him, even not taking into account his ability to bowl a handful of overs if necessary (but no more than a handful!).

Duminy is a tough one... even when he was not performing in tests he still did well for the LO stuff. But he has not scored a century either in forever, but mitigating this, he consistently been coming in at 5/6 trying to finish games..

It is easy to get a fifty when the team is doing well. He doesn't score runs when the team is under pressure like today. Can you remember the last time he was the reason that SA won a match? Or the last time he guided the team safe in a chase?

Problem with this is batting AB at 5, needs to bat at 3 or 4.... and if we drop Duminy, Behardien comes in and while he is a hack, he is a hack that avg close to 40 and has a S/R at 90+ in the last 2 years, yes its padded with not outs but that is not his fault... There is also probably an argument for Pretorius at 6 (can do it) and Duminy shifting to 3/4 and Faf at 5. But there is no obvious answers.

What about this match, where he came in when the score was 52/3 and shared in a 178 run partnership with Rossouw?

Australia tour of South Africa, 5th ODI: South Africa v Australia at Cape Town, Oct 12, 2016

He wasn't the reason that South Africa won, but he was definitely a reason.

We have been hearing this for months, but hopefully this time...

Morkel: Light at end of tunnel | Sport24
During SuperSport commentary on the first ODI of the current series against Sri Lanka in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, former Proteas coach Eric Simons cautioned that despite their potential, Phehlukwayo, Wayne Parnell and Chris Morris – all of whom played that day – were “too alike”.
He said the side missed the genuine pace, experience and aggression of men like Steyn and Morkel.
Shaun Pollock, meanwhile, said he felt the seam attack seemed “just a bit thin for consistency”, implying that he, too, would be favourably disposed toward Morkel clawing his way back into the mix as more of a specialist fast bowler.
I don`t know if I quite agree with these statements... would not call Phehlukwayo, Wayne Parnell and Chris Morris alike and Morris is pretty aggressive bowler. Also totally ignoring the batting aspect here of their batting/striking ability. Don`t get me wrong I would love for Steyn and Morkel to come back and experience is always important, just feels an odd statement to make.

I'd love Morkel back in the ODI team way more than Steyn to be honest. But the Parnell, Morris , Phelukwayo combo has potential. Phelukwayo has delivered at the death for the Dolphins so many times. We need a long term death bowler.

A light hearted look at the south Africa's selection issues. Was just wondering how close a test would be if a qouta team came up against a non quota team. I would the latter expect the latter to win but are weaker in certain areas like their spinners but then much weaker in the batting and fielding.

Cook
Elgar
Faf
AB
Riley
De kock
Pretourious
Harmer
Steyn
Abbott
Morkel

Prince
Bavuma
Amla
Duminy
Peterson
Ontong
Philander
Maharaj
Rabada
Tahir
Ngidi

They are the 2 strongest sides I can think of, though I've probably missed a few out and bavuma or duminy might have to keep lol

Peterson is banned isn't he? Also I'm pretty sure Prince retired.

Yeah Peterson and Hendricks are out of it.

But right now, Zonda could probably take Peterson`s place and Hendricks would be good to open with Bavuma. Mosehle could replace Tahir and keep. Can replace Ontong with (Jason) Smith. Still leaves a good 4 man attack with a a few allrounders. Best thing is I still did not have to put Ramela in the team.

Hendricks
Bavuma
Amla
Duminy
Zonda
Jason Smith
Mosehle+
Philander
Maharaj
Rabada
Ngidi

Phehlukwayo and Shamsi on the bench.

Taking out Rillee and Abbott as unavailable.... replace with Olivier and de Bruyn. I would not play Pretorius, and Markram could make the team, Elgar at 3.

Cook
Markram
Elgar
Faf
AB
de Bruyn
QDK
Harmer
Steyn
Olivier
Morkel

Mulder and Pretorius on the bench.

2 pretty good teams.
