Why did Forkers never get a second test anyhow? Two twenties and 6 wickets isn't a terrible return
you have to remember that faulkner was looking mediocre as all hell until the game turned into an ODer. and then you have to remember this: he ain't that good of a bowler and he ain't that good of a batsman. so he ain't easy to fit into a test team. and that's why he hasn't got another test.

Call me crazy but I feel like Maxwell opening the batting is not a terrible idea if things go wrong in the India tour. It has been done before and the experiment failed, but its probably worth a shot again (if he gets selected at all).

Absolutely true.

But tbf to Forkenstein if he could reproduce his FC numbers (34 with the bat and 24 with the ball) as a test no.6 for us he'd be our best performing 6 since Huss and our best all rounder since Miller. Big IF, but considering the lengths our selectors have gone to to make an all rounder it's not completely out of the question that he might get a 2nd debut in the role.
So Cartwright was a return to the AR at 6 approach. If they persist then the other contenders are Forkers, Maxi and Agar? If batting is the focus then Maxi and Agar are the better options then. If they play Lyon and Sok having a 3rd spinner doesn't help balance.

They need to figure out what role the AR will play in bowling and how many overs they will bowl if/when we spend days in the field. Hopefully this is done before the first test.

The guy who averages 26 in first class cricket?

Agar's batting is so massively overrated

The normal awards that everyone else has
Exactly. He bats at 7 or 8 for NSW. Can't expect him to bat at 6 for Aus. The times he has gone up the order for WA he has struggled.

Honestly if we want a spinning all rounder to bat at 6 and it isn't Maxwell, might as well let O'Keefe bat at 6. Better bowler than Agar and I feel like he'd be a more reliable bat over time as well.

Agar is massively overrated as a package. He's young still, and I think he'll improve, but at the moment I don't think he should be considered for tests. Needs a bumper shield season or two before that.

No question the guy can build an innings when he gets in. It's the amount of times he fails to get in that makes him a handy tail ender rather than an all rounder.

I think Agar could bat seven at a push - I'd be comfortable with that - but the problem with that is that for it to work you'd need a keeper good enough with the bat to play as a batsman alone at six, and that's just not something Australia have at the moment. If someone's going to play as an allrounder in the current side they need to be good enough to bat six rather than just seven, which makes players like Agar and Faulkner not really in contention (unless they force their way in on bowling alone) for mine.

Is it safe to say that Maxwell is the only AR who can bat 6 ability wise? Cartwright looked ok in the test. Just don't know if he is more of a future player than a right now player.

I'd say so.

If Faulkner gets picked he should be picked as one of the four bowlers; which would lengthen the tail nicely.

Only way to find out is to give him a proper crack. Unlike Maddinson he had at least done enough to be a serious selection. That being so my preferred option is still that he should be given India and most of next Summer to prove his mettle.

All other options I've discussed are really only next best ideas if the selectors insist on being ****s.

Some articles today suggesting Australia will play Maxwell and Marsh at 7 and 8. I guess the plan is to try and bat for draws in each match then?

"some articles suggesting" isn't exactly a reliable source

anyway no chance of that happening, it just doesn't make sense. If Maxwell played he'd bat ahead of the keeper regardless, and M.Marsh has no chance of being selected let alone playing.

I dunno, never underestimate the stupidity of our selectors. That would be a recipe for disaster though.
no it would be completely out of sync with their usual modus operandi. They won't drop Lyon, and they will play 2 spinners, but the 2 spinners won't be Maxwell + Lyon (both offies). So if that team plays then they would play 2 spinners and only 1 specialist quick, which simply won't happen. That team is impossible.

Even if the keeper is Wade?

Head's playing of Wasim shows what would actually happen in India batting wise though. I don't rate Head's bowling above Maxwell's either, although he did bowl well tonight.
