One of my all time favourites cricketers was a lawn mower and gardener for the St Kilda council when he wasn't playing cricket. He lost a finger on his bowling hand as a child. His sister shoved it in a flour sack to stop the bleeding and probably saved his life. Possibly the worst batsman and fielder of his era, he was nonetheless a fine spin bowler who took over 5 wickets per test. 46 years old when he made his test debut, he was a modest, hardworking, stoic, blue collar man, whose name suits him so well, Bert Ironmonger.
