I agree that Kallis is under-rated here but I don't think this result is a good indicator of that.

There are members here who tease me about how much I like Kallis and I didn't even vote for him. If anything, maybe you just under-rate Sanga. :)
Not necessarily this thread alone, but I came to my conclusion from a combination of different threads overall, same for Border actually. I have been reading threads here a lot longer been posting tbh.

You are welcome to have your own opinion but I don't think I underrate Kumar at all though. He may just be right after the other 3 for me.

I actually keep up with your standardized average list, and it does have some bearing on my ratings, though I don't think it's perfect. Didn't you say the other day Kallis comes off as better than Sangakkara in that formula?

Grace vs Dravid was the toughest for me.
Why?

I was of the opinion everyone was either a Grace fan or not. People who like him vote for him in ATG contests. People who don't rate pre 1900s cricket tend to vote against him. Explain why you were betwixt and between these camps?

another score update:

Sobers leads 29-2
Barry Richards leads 21-9
Headley leads 29-1
Pollock leads 24-6

Sachin leads 30-1
Sanga leads 26-5
Lara leads 30-0
Chappell leads 27-3

Hobbs leads 30-1
Steve Waugh leads 16-15
Hammond leads 29-1
Gavaskar leads 19-12

Viv leads 30-1
Grace leads 23-8
Hutton leads 28-2
Ponting leads 24-6

Gavaskar/ABDV still kind of hangs in the balance(compared to the rest of the field) but really Waugh/Trumper is the only tight match of the round.

Sanga smashing Kallis is one of those situations where the vote is more about who could actually vote the other way rather than the gap between the candidates.

If you rate Kallis as a batsman you do so based on record and longevity. But anyone who does rates Sanga for the same reasons. So even even Kallis fans would probably vote for Sanga anyway eg Pews.

Kallis v Viv would probably be a more even battle because of the ideological split and not because the two batsmen are closer in terms of quality.

Other memorable (for me) example - getting carried to a BOTM final by the English vote before losing all of it to fredfertang in the final. /notbitter

Yeah a big gap doesn't necessarily mean the players are far apart; it could just mean most people agree that one is slightly better than the other. Sanga v Kallis was really tough for me.
Yes, Sanga vs Kallis is one of the toughest pairing and Kallis, Border are just unlucky. ftr, I voted for Kallis.

Who voted but didn't pick who was best in a few of the battles? I can't see any abstains but not all scores add up to 31.

Seems to me the question is "who is the second best batsman ever?" and I'm not going to vote for anyone unless I can construct an argument whereby they are the second greatest batsman ever.

I can understand how that argument could be made for the following, although for me personally there are only two genuine candidates.

Garry Sobers vs Virender Sehwag

Sachin Tendulkar vs Ken Barrington
Kumar Sangakkara vs Jacques Kallis

Jack Hobbs vs Rohan Kanhai
Victor Trumper vs Steve Waugh

Sunil Gavaskar vs AB De Villiers

Viv Richards vs Neil Harvey
WG Grace vs Rahul Dravid

^NUFAN, there. Someobody had to be difficult lol

Choosing Walcott over Headley while choosing Barry over Weekes is interesting. The only reason I can see for that is you rate Barry's skills against quality pace bowling more highly than you do Headley's.

Having never seen Trumper play, can I switch my vote to Waugh? I like Waugh. I'll pretend it's Mark.

that's a slippery slope... like normally switching votes should def be allowed but this is a pretty critical time to do it. Might set a strange precedent because I know next round will be full of a far closer matches

...I'll wait 2 hours to see if someone else will split them, then I'll allow you to do it.

I haven't voted yet, can I go ahead and pick Waugh just for this choice (or do I have to give my votes for all the given choices)?
