The ATS Teams General arguing/discussing thread

This'll sound a bit patriotic, but I'd back this team to be at the very competitive against a few actual test XIs of other nations at times.
they'd struggle to take 5 wickets.

India in last 23 years:

Devang Gandhi
Woorkeri Raman
Pravin Amre
Mohammad Kaif*
Hemang Badani
Ajay Ratra+
Nikhil Chopra
David Johnson
Dodda Ganesh
Tinu Yohannan
Rahul Sanghvi
stupid question, but what was the deal with david johnson? most un-indian of names.

You think there are no Christians in India or what?

Visit Goa or Kerala - and that'll change your perception. The British, the Portugese, and the French had converted enough people to Christianity 100 or more years ago. One may be called Jacob Matthew but probably looks like Romesh Pawar. David Johnson looked like Javagal Srinath FTR.

Openers are hard since we've been relatively consistent and I'm not picking Cowan in this.
If you're short on openers and you're picking Marsh, then surely he opens?

They converted their surnames and not just give their children Christian names? Or was there interracial marrying as well?

Whatever it takes!!!
Cool down guys. Kaif was a hero in ODIs. I made this team for the longer format. I need 3 specialist middle-order batsmen (and there haven't been many in that role, thanks to our famous middle-order). Vijay Bhardwaj doesn't fit that role, as he was AR. Do you have any specialist middle-order batsman in mind? Raina? Anyone else? [Think both Yuvraj and Ajay Jadeja were better than Kaif and Badani]

Jacob Martin and Hrishikesh Kanitkar played test cricket for us, never forget....

For the keeper's slot, Deep Dasgupta can give Ajay Ratra a run for his money. We've had some bad keepers after Mongia retired and Dhoni started - Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Karthik (and now Wriddhiman Saha) were the only good ones.

Jacob Martin didn't play tests. Kanitkar had a good FC record (and so did Nilesh Kulkarni btw).

So far, I only like the (Raina for Kaif) suggestion.

W V Raman scored 100s against RSA in RSA.. Even Sachin needed 2 tours to do that. WV RAman has an ace FC record too, btw...

I know. The other option for the opening spot is Vikram Rathour (who also had good FC record)...can't remember any other specialist opener

No he didn't. He made a hundred each in 92, 97 and 2001. Actually, I just realised, apart from 2006, he had atleast one big hundred in every series. I've been underrating his SA record.

Ya for one moment I forgot Tendulkar's hundred in SA right after the '92 WC

You can always do what Sourav did and pick Yuvraj "he is the opener of the future" Singh to open.. :p Cant believe Ganguly sabotaged Aakash Chopra's career for this Yuvi for Opener project... :(

Don't understand how Amre gets in these teams ahead of Karthik, Dasgupta, Rathore, Chopra, Bangar... bloke averaged 40+.... you'llbe thowing Kambli and Rohit in there next...

Says a lot about Australia over the years just how hard it is to pick a side (without going for 11 spinners that is) : luckily I'm old enough to go back to the 80's to find some openers.
Wellham, HIlditch, Khawaja, Quiney, Bailey, Young, Dyer*, Hastings, Williams B, Gilbert, McGain

England is too hard for the opposite reason.... limiting it to those who played 5+ tests, you still get a good sample

Cook G, Curtis, Ward, Adams, Fairbrother, Capel, French*, Salisbury, Dawson, Illott, Jarvis

If they bat and bowl to their averages they should score 140 against about 530.
